My camera loses its settings particularly the image resolution when it is turned off. The battery is fully charged. Everytime I turn it on is has resorted back to HQ resolution instead of the SHQ setting that I chose. It also returns to using the xD card instead of the CF card each time it is powered off.

Hello, Possible low battery power, if battery is several years old they lose their storage capacity, Try another fully charged battery. Best Regards, Russell
If unused for any length of time, rechargeable batteries lose their ability to retain a charge. Try it with a brand new, fully-charged battery. FWIW, I recharge all my camera and flashgun batteries monthly.
Here are the steps: 1. Make sure you will install a new or fully charged battery/batteries into your camera. 2. Clean the battery contacts. a. Remove the battery/batteries and the memory card from your camera, then wipe the battery contacts with a soft, clean cloth. b. Reinstall the battery/batteries into your camera. Please make sure that you are installing a fresh/ fully charged battery c. Without the memory card, turn your camera on. (If it works then it?s your memory card that is faulty) 3. Please test with the a different battery If you do not have access to another battery Try these steps instead: Please take the battery out of the camera. Insert the charger into the unit from the main socket and turn the camera on. If the camera works you will need to replace the battery. If you camera doesn?t switch on you will need to order a No power repair or a new cable.

The date and time settings are displayed after turning on the camera.
Solution
It is normal for the camera to lose time and date settings if the internal battery is left uncharged for an extended period of time; some cameras will default to the time-setting screen when turned on if this happens. Follow the steps below to resolve this issue.
Turn off the camera.
Do one of the following:
Insert a fully-charged battery pack into the camera.
If the camera is supplied with an AC power adapter, plug the adapter into a working electrical outlet and then connect it to the camera.
Allow the internal battery that retains the time and date information to charge for at least 90 minutes.
After enough time has elapsed to sufficiently charge the internal battery, turn on the camera.
Set the time and date.
Turn off the camera for 30 seconds.
Turn on the camera again.
Check to see if the date and time have been saved.
The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required. The Sony® eService Web site at http://eservice.sony.com/ can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer.
1. If you are using TIFF mode for uncompressed images, the camera takes much longer to process the image because of the very large file size. It takes longer between shots and longer to play back a TIFF image. The TIFF setting on the camera Top LCD Display is 'No Stars' (One Star = Basic, Two Stars = Normal, Three Stars = High Resolution, No Stars = be patient for TIFF). Unless you are doing professional images, we suggest that you use the normal or high resolution JPG settings (Two or Three Stars / FULL) for good results.
2. If the camera can not focus on a subject, or can not determine the appropriate exposure setting, the camera will beep and disable the shutter button. This is to avoid improper processing of the image. This is usually due to either poor lighting conditions or movement.
3. The camera Flash Element requires ten seconds to recharge between images. Although the camera is ready to continue capturing images almost immediately in bright (daylight) settings, if you are using Flash photography the Flash element will need to charge between shots.
4. The batteries may be running low. LCD Display, Flash, and Playback use much more power than taking pictures. It is possible to quickly consume battery power, even if you are not taking many pictures. Try turning the Mode Dial to the OFF position to recycle power. If the camera beeps and will not take a picture under normal conditions, you may need to change batteries.

I found my solution! The "reset all" option was turned on. It helps to read the manual :)
Thanks
