If the person cannot hear you then, either your microphone driver not installed or not working OR the microphone is not configured in Skype.
To test your microphone then click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Sound recorder. Then record your voice and then play it back. If this is OK then the microphone need to be configured in Skype.
To configure the microphone - Open Skype - Tools - Options - Audio Settings for the Microphone THEN click on Save.

SOURCE: Mic not working in 710 M

Hello poo.
Can I assume that your audio is still working? Let's look at a couple of things within your notebook.
1. Open Control Panel than open Sound and Audio Devices.
Click the Audio tab. What should be listed in both playback & recording is device AC97? Click the Voice tab. Same device should be there. Close all opened windows except Comtrol Panel. Open System.
2. Click the Hadrware tab, than click Device Manager.
Scroll down to Sound, video and game controller. Click the + sign to list all devices. Do you see the AC97? Is there any yellow ! points?
3.If you saw the AC97 in all places described & you have no yellow ! point the odds are your internal mic chip is defective.
The only way to fix this is through Dell & they would replace your mainbord in the notebook. However if you wish too I can explain how to uninstall your sound device driver & reinstall the sound/mic driver software just to make sure. Ready?
While still in Device Manager. Right click once on AC97. A small window will display, left click uninstall. Your notebook may ask if your sure. Click yes. Close all opened windows. Re-start your notebook. Right click on your desktop & creat a folder, name it AC97.
We need to go to Dell now. Click the link below.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_710M&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
You'll notice the page opends to your Inspiron 710m.
Click the + sign next to Audio. Click on STAC 9750 AC97.
The download page loads. Click the ( Download Now ) button.
You can either Run it now or save it in the AC97 folder you created. Once the download finishes. Close all opened windows.
Last part. Click the start button, than click run. Click Browse & open the AC97 folder click the file R90698.EXE. Click ok.
The driver software will start to install. Once finished re-start your notebook. To test your mic. Open Control Panel, open Sound & audio devices. Click the Voice tab. Click Test Hardware tab. Windows may run it's own little test befor opening the test page.
Now your at Microphone Test page. Follow the instructions.
If you heard yourself through the testing your mic is working.
If the testing failed..... Than we are back to a defective mic.
I hope this has helped.
If you have any more questions feel free to post them here.

Good Luck & kind Regards

SOURCE: mic stuff up???

There may be an option in MSN software (under Tools perhaps) that states which microphone and camera to use while using the program.

I would verify it is set to use the correct ones you are wanting to you and see if that works!

Well I have a msi laptop and the built in web isnt working and I checked if it was on and it says it is. But when I go to skpe or msn nothing happens and the little light beside it doesnt go on? I need...

You will have to set up or configure your webcam software to work with any chat program before you can broadcast.with it.
If it has a built in mic with the webcam -Make it your default mic.
TEST SPEAKERS
Right click on speaker icon in System Tray or from Control Panel
Select "Playback Devices"
The speaker icon ( checked as working) and volume level graph should be visible
Right click on the volume graph and click "Test"
Left hand speakers followed by right hand should be heard

SET DEFAULT & TEST MIC
Click "Recording" tab.
To set required (webcam) mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties"
In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click 'OK'
Click "Levels" tab and ramp up sliders ( adjust to suit later)
Return to "Recording". Test mic by speaking and make sure volume graph displays

Restart computer

Test your webcam here to make sure it broadcasts ok - Hit 'Allow' in the top window and check your cam in the left hand panel.

Not working ? - troubleshoot your drivers and software - get your cam working before moving on

Working OK ?

CONFIGURE TO SKYPE
Connect webcam
Its good practice to disconnect and re-connect your webcam before you start (To reboot the webcam software) - if you have been using it elsewhere the SKYPE software may have difficulty in locating it, even if you exited the previous program correctly.
The reason being, the webcam software can remain hooked-up to a program and needs to be rebooted.
Mine, I just unplug it from the USB and plug it back in to reboot the software.
If yours is integral with the computer you will have to re-start the computer, use a keyboard shortcut or disable / enable the webcam from the Device Manager.

Start Skype.
On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Options'.
In the navigation pane of the Skype 'Options' window, click 'Audio Settings'
Run down the list setting your defaults
Select your webcam as the default microphone.
Make a free test call
Click 'Save'
In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Video Settings.
This will launch your webcam
Adjust quality of picture in 'Settings'
Check the correct webcam is shown as default
Click Save
Test your webcam by making a Skype test call.

Webcam

You both have to be in the same program to use your webcams.
You cannot hear her msn - this is probably a failing on her set up (mic)
She may have a laptop with a built in mic and she needs to nominate her webcam mic as default so that msn/skype software can locate it.
I suggest you both follow these instructions

I downloaded msn live messenger 2009 and have had nothing but problems with my mic. I have a HP pro camera with a built in mic. This was working fine with msn live 8.1. I have a brand new HP with Vista....

Normal 0 See section C. Windows Live Messenger in the info below to setup the Audio & Video.
Also send this to your family and friends so they have there computer setup properly.
Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.

Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.

A. Skype Setup:

After downloading and installing Skype (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/skype/windows/beta/downloading/ ) set it up as follows:

  1. Go to Tools, then Options, and click on Audio Settings and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  2. Then click on the Video Settings.
  3. The camera if Installed Properly will come up and show a video picture.
  4. Then, on the bottom of the page click on Save.

The camera and audio should function properly. Your friends and Family will now be able to see and her to you.

C. Windows Live Messenger:

  1. After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
  2. Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on “ “Show Menus.” And then click on “Show the Menu Bar”.
  3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
  4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
NOTE: Your audio and video should work. Enjoy.

When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.
Hope this helps. Bud

Does not work on Skype and Messenger

In Vista, right click on the speaker icon in your system tray (usually located at the bottom right of the screen) and select "Recording Devices". Be sure that your microphone is enabled in this list. In Skype and MSN, find the audio hardware setup, and make sure to select your mic-in port into which the mic is plugged.
