If I wait a while it will drain when I press cancel, but I get a clicking sound if I press cancel right after the wash. I checked the drain hose which is where it has always been. It runs up under the sink and then down again into our disposal unit. The inside of the unit and all of our dishes smell really foul.

More likely: the solenoid which directs the water to either the drain or the spray arm is clogged/jammed. Located underneath near the drain line.

Remove the drain line where it hooks into the disposal. See if the plug, which must be removed to let water thru, is still in there. I ran into this on a service call a few years back. Removed to plug and voila! Hope this helps!

you need a new cycle selector ...or "timer "....
SOURCE: dishwasher doesn't drain completely after full cycle
If there is any blockage in your diposal, water will comes up to the sink, since it happened to me. As soon I installed the air gap then it fixed the problem. No air gap, water flowing is slowing down conflicting with timed draining causing this problem. Let's think of this, if you fill up water in a 1/2 galon milk container, and you try to emty it. If you pull down straightly , it will be slow compared to pull it at an agle to let air going into the opening. The air vent helps water flow better meeting the timed draining.

My Kenmore Ultra Wash III won't open the water valve. The pump starts and the heater turns on, but no water. Any ideas?
Hi
Dishwasher not draining issue usually occurs due
to kinked drain pipe, clogged drain filter or drain pump. First make sure that
the drain is not clogged and remove clogs if present. If no visible lint is
present then remove the lower front access panel to check the drain filter and
drain pump for any clogs, you'll need to clean the drain filter and drain pump
completely. Also, check for any food pieces stuck near the pump impeller &
clean the chopper assembly. Please note that dishwashers don't drain out the
complete water such that heating element doesn't overheat. Hope this helps...
Please post back for any further assistance.

Had a service guy out who cleaned out the drain line which he said was not plugged, but slow. The unit drained itself while he was there (of course!) after running a short cycle. But, when I ran a longer cycle, we had the same problem. Again, as soon as the water in the bottom cooled, we could get it to drain by pressing cancel. Until then, there was just a clicking sound. He also found some paperlike debris in there, although I don't remember putting anything with labels or paper in there. Does this help?
