Brand new PS3 80GB - says I don't have enough HDD space!!!

So I have just plugged in and set up my brand new PS3 console. 80 GB should be enough for the 'casual gamer' right? well all excited about my new PS3 I proceed to play my first ever game on it. Rachet and Clank. to my surprise the game wont play and a message appears saying:

'your HDD has insufficient space. You need 419 MB to download the initial setup for Rachet and Clank: tools of destruction. Please create some free space and try again....'

I can't believe this!? Have I done something wrong in the setup or is 80 GB just not enough to start this game?

I look forward to you quick response....!

    I have the exact same problem w the 80g ps3 with the ratchet and clank game and the same error message. But after having read this persons solution i wonder how do you add or delete memory to the HDD. Yes i am technically challenged. Thank you.

    This is EXACTLY what is happening to us. How do you delete data from the HDD? Is that the same as formatting it?

    i have the same problem like the one above i brought the game ratchet but cant play it for the same reason what should i do

    I need to know how to fix this problem without downloading other games as I do not know how to do that either. Just bought the ps3 console and Rachet & Clank and screen showed HDD has insufficient space. I need an easier fix as I am not very technological.

This is a known big in the game , i listed the report below

We have identified a data loading issue with PS3 and Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction, which may affect users who boot the game up for the first time.

During the pre-game set-up procedure, game data is automatically saved to the PS3 HDD. It has been found that, on occasion, this data fails to copy to the HDD, with an on-scree message claiming that there is insufficient space to do so - despite the fact that there is in fact enough free space on the drive.

ACTION: For every 4GB of HDD space, there is a 540MB range that will cause the game to display a message indicating that there is insufficient space to create game data. This message will therefore occur when the following amount of free space is on the HDD:

- 4010-4550MB;
- 8010-8550MB;
- 12010-12550MB;
- at every subsequent 4GB interval (i.e 16010-16550MB, etc)

If the PS3 HDD is within any of these ranges when booting without game data created, this message will appear. After game data is created, this will never appear, so if a user doesnt encounter it at first, they never will. Any users who do receive this message will need to either delete data from or save data to the HDD, so that the amount of free space no longer lies within the range detailed above

I just went thru this all day on Christmas day(2008). What Sony had me do was to download a demo game from thier web site and intall it( I downloaded the free ones)...... then you can play ratchet and clank!!! MAKE sure the game you download has enogh MB to make the extra space you need. I downloaded 2 small games to get it downloaded faster. This sounds crazy but it works!! The support guy said this was the only game that we should have this happen with.......Good Luck

try to reformat you hard disk,. if its a physical defect then there is no way you can fix it.

on the other hand, if you are familiar with RMA, then you could send the defective Hard disk that you have to the Manufacturer and they will replace it brand new...

Insufficient HDD space to play a game on a brand new ps3

This is a common problem (bug) with this game. Basically you have to delete something, anything, off your harddrive. If you have nothing on then download a demo or something then delete it. This should fool yr ps3 into releasing the space you need to play r&c.

Game says not enough HDD space but there is 64 GB of space.

I downloaded a SoulCalibur IV demo and tried running Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction again and it allowed me to continue on to the main menu this time.

Ps3 80 gb

Thats means you do not have enough available space on your hard drive to install the graphics program. You need to go into your games saves, music, or vids and delete the ones that you feel you don't need anymore. I hope this helps. Thanks!
