Generator is burning oil and choking out

I HAVE A BRIGGS AND STRATTON 5550 WATT GENERATOR 10 HP THAT WAS RUNNING WELL AND MY SON FILLED IT AND SINCE THEN IT SMOKES TERRIBLY WHEN RUNNING AND WILL ONLY RUN FOR SHORT PERIODS BEFORE CHOKING OUT. I FOUND OIL IN THE AIR FILTER AREA AND OIL COMES OUT OF THE LINE FROM THE OHV TO THE CARB.

You have/had too much oil in it. After it is brought down to proper level, it may have to burn the oil that is in areas that it should not be in. Another thing that may cause this, is a dirty air filter, can cause enough suction to pull oil around valves, and other places a clean filter will not. It may have oil in the filter too.

10 hp b&s engine will not run with choke open

Sounds like your carb needs rebuilt .This condition is caused by blockage of ports and jets in the carb .Running a fuel stabilizer will help prevent this .

I have a Briggs and Stratton Elite series5500 watt portable generator. I cannot get it started. It has gas and oil but will not start. What could be the problem

Ensure choke is turned on while starting.
Ensure spark lead is fully pushed onto plug.
Remove spark plug and check there is a spark by keeping spark plug against body of engine and cranking engine, if no spark check there are no broken wires in ignition circuit.
Turn off gas tap if present. Remove the float bowl while holding a container under it to collect any gas. Turn on tap and check the fuel flows freely.
Check the air filter is clean. If it has foam elements these can be washed with warm water and detergent, rinsed and then oiled with a teaspoon of oil evenly distributed through the foam.

TROT-BILT 7800 WATT GEN. ONLY RUNS ON FULL CHOKE

Hello, your main jet is plugged with varnish or corroded with water. You need to remove the float bowl and see which it is and clean it. That will fix your problem.

Recoil starter spring has unwound Briggs & Stratton 4 HP mower motor

you can buy the whole recoil + pull cord ready to install ,or have a small engine shop rewind it if you cant. some times the tab that held it breaks and you have to replace it.
