These players have issues with id3v2 tags or something. Try stripping off the tags of the mp3's and/or upgrading the firmware
Here the links to download the firmware v1.65 and v1.75

MANAGER connection type
In the second column next to GO, enter the word manager or select POPULAR KEYWORD.
On the page right side a list shows up.
Select the iriver music manager to see the information how to download and install the software. The manager for the computer matches the manager firmware in the player.
Steve, Mine did this and I was able to get it working again by taking out the 3 tiny screws holding the case together. In my case, I had tiny grains of sand from the beach, which were probably had salt on them and were probably drawing moisture to the board and shorting components. I brushed it off carefully with a paint brush, blew it out as best I could, and generally cleaned the parts. Eventually, it came back to life! and continues to play today. Good luck with yours!
I can´t connect to my PC with my iRiver device (iFP-890) and Wi Vista 64 with SP1, not trough Music Manager or Explorer.
I´v followed the instructions above.
