The Sceptre TV do use the Sony codes. However, the cheap universal remotes do not have the buttons needed. The Volume Up/down and channel up/down are controlled with the circle of buttons (arrows) in the middle of the remote.
You can get an OEM remote from Sceptre. They still have them available. Sceptre is in California.

Have Emerson TV and lost original remote. Direct TV remote was programmed by Direct TV and working fine, then my son did something and it messed up. Bought a universal remote, able to get TV on and program...

There are control buttons on the side of the tv. Usually just on/off, volume, channel and menu. Go it menu using these buttons to navigate. Reset tv to default settings or sometimes called factory settings. This should get colour back. Download or read instructions on your remote and reprogram. Sometimes with modern universal remotes you need to program them through your PC with a specific application downloaded from remote manufacturer.

Cant get the remote to work for menu options just started setting it up already programed to my direct tv remote now nothing is working or either remote t.v or direct tv remote

To diagnose a remote control problem follow these steps.

1) unplug the TV power cord, count to five and plug it back in. (reboot)
2) try to power on with ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER remote.

if that works- your TV and original remote are fine.

if that does not work:
4) try to power on with buttons on the TV itself- if it works- check your remote batteries and try remote again.

Direct TV and Dish Network remotes will ONLY operate SIMPLE function of your TV such as power, volume, input.
They will NOT access your TV menu.

Scepter X32 LCD High Definition telivision. Just

Yes it's dead; the power supply in these tvs do not have much stamina;
Due to the fact that their are no provisions for removal of heat. TV does not
have enough fans because customers don't like the noise and, the power supply surge caused by turning a cold set on and, off is not addressed by the manufacturer.
That is why the sets have only one a year warranty.
The choice you have is: repair the power supply or, replace the power supply
unless your set is under warranty.
