Question about Toshiba Tecra A3 Notebook

Cannot find how to disable the Touchpad

I have a Toahiba Tecra A3. It had a terminal illness & the fat table was totally corrupted, so my pc tech. installed Windows xp, but didn't have the relevent Toshiba rocovery disc. I now cannot find anywhere to disable the touchpad & it's driving me crazy, as I keep accidentally touching it, so it's like 2 drivers trying to drive the one m/vehicle. I have tried Control Panel and am now at a total loss. HELP please??!! Thanks Wendy

Thanks for your time & the information. I am a total techno dinosaour, so when I clicked on the link, I then ticked the windows xp to d'load, but I don't know if it actually d'loaded it or not, as it didn't ask me if I wanted to 'run' it or not.
My other problem then, is that if it did d'load it, I don't know where to find it on my system.
Sorry to be such a dope, but I'd really appreciate your 'holding my hand' through your help please.
    Many thanks again.

Thanks printerhater for your suggestion, however I tried doing that first, but there is no touchpad option available in the Control Panel.
Unfortunately, I don't have the manual for this laptop, as someone borrowed my carry case & removed the manual(permanently.!

I live in Australia. There are no further letters, etc. beside the Tecra A3, so can't help with that either. There are numbers that may help .... However, it does give the Part number as if this helps.

I stated earlier that I was running ME prior to the reformatted h'disk, but after looking under the case, it states that WindowsXP Professional was installed when I purchased it.

Thanks again for your help ...

Hi peony, For some reason, I suspect you're not within the borders of the US, and it turns out that there are at least three versions of the Tecra A3, so please let us know which country you are located in, and if you have the A3, the A3-S711, or the A3-S731... it might make a difference in the drivers you need to install... You'll need to check your Tecra user's manual, or look on the bottom of the laptop for a label with the specific information about your system, and post the details here... In the meantime, I've copied these instructions for you directly from the Toshiba Tecra A3 online instruction manual. To disable the TouchPad, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, then Control Panel; the Control Panel will open. 2. Click Printers and Other Hardware. 3. Click the Mouse icon. 4. Click the TouchPad ON/OFF tab; the TouchPad ON/OFF tab will appear. 5. Select Disable or Enable, whichever is appropriate. 6. Click Apply. 7. Click OK 8. Close the Printers and Other Hardware Window. Once you've done that, reboot the system, and test it to be sure the TouchPad is now disabled. After you provide the details I've requested (which version of the Tecra A3 are you using), we should be able to provide you with more specific information on which driver you need to download and install. Good luck; post the information I've requested, and let us know if you have problems disabling the TouchPad...

    Hi Wendy,

Thanks for the information about your Tecra A3; now, you should be able to download and install the proper TouchPad driver, reboot the system, THEN disable the TouchPad through the Control Panel. I suspect that the TouchPad is working through some generic Windows driver, or that it is utilizing the basic mouse driver; with a little luck, we'll be able to correct that, and make it work (or NOT work) as you prefer...

You can download the TouchPad driver directly from here:

Click on that link (or, copy and paste it into a new browser window); you should then be able to download the TouchPad driver directly onto your system. BE SURE to save it to the Desktop, so you can find it easily once the download has finished (it is only about 2.5MB in size, so it shouldn't take long to download).

Once the download is complete, CLOSE ANY RUNNING PROGRAMS, then locate the file (ta3tpadx.exe) on your Desktop. Double-click the filename, and follow the prompts to install the driver. Once the driver has been installed, REBOOT THE SYSTEM, then test it to be sure everything is working properly.

Lastly, once the proper TouchPad drivers have been installed, and the system rebooted back to the Desktop, following the steps I posted previously should allow you to disable the TouchPad through the Control Panel.

Good luck; keep us "posted", OK?

When you hear about the long beep it is a RAM problem which is not totally inserted. You need to check the RAM remove and reinsert it again and try to power on.
