In camera mode, use the menu button to set the self timer on. It only stays on for 1 picture. 10 second delay I believe, once you release the shutter.

How do I use the timer on my camera?

Select the timer mode (left arrow on the 4-curser-button). There are 3 settings in the order of 10sec timer; 2sec timer and timer off. Select either the 10 second timer (if you want to be in the picture) or the 2 second timer (more appropriate for long exposures when camera is on a tripod or similar to avoid camera shake when pressing the shutter button), then press the shutter button fully. The subject will then be automatically focused just before the picture is taken. There's a little light on the front of the camera (top right hand corner when you look at the camera) which should blink when self timer is activated. Pressing the menu button while timer is activated will cancel self timer mode.
In low light conditions this light may turn on brightly to double up as an AF assist light.

Hope that helps

How do I set the self timer on my cannon a560 camera?

Press the self-timer button to cycle through self-timer settings. The rectangle indicates normal shooting, the clock indicates self-timer. Depending on the shooting mode, you may also see overlapped rectangles for continuous shooting.

To change the delay time, select [Self-timer] from the Recording menu.

The self-timer button is the same as the down-arrow on the circular multi-selector, marked with a clock.

Set the timer

  1. Place your camera on a tripod and prepare your scene.
  2. While in a shooting mode, press the timer button (the bottom button in the circle set on of the back of the camera). Press it repeatedly. It will cycle through self-timer and remote-control. On the screen, a Timer will appear for the self-timer and a little Remote with a lightning bolt will appear for the remote-control. Stop pressing the button when the timer appears, pause for 3 seconds to allow the camera to confirm the setting the icon will disappear.
  3. These instructions are described on Pg 55 of the manual, but I will repeat them in simplified form in case you don't have the manual.
  4. Once the timer setting is set, press the shutter-release button fully. If you press it half-way it will focus and lock the exposure, then press it fully.
  5. The self timer/remote control lamp will light for 10 seconds. Get in position in the scene, after the 10 seconds the light will begin blinking. After 2 more seconds, the picture is taken.
  6. To cancel the timer mode, press the Timer button again; however the timer mode is automatically canceled after one shot.
It is important in all timer scene shots with cameras, don't stand directly in front of the camera because this will then focus on you instead of the scene.

Does camera have timer

Putting Yourself in the Picture The Self Timer creates a 10-second delay between the time you press the Shutter button and the time the picture is taken. 1 Place the camera on a flat surface or use a tripod. 2 In any Still mode, press the Self Timer button. The Self Timer icon appears in the status area. 3 Compose the scene. Then press the Shutter button half-way and hold to set the exposure and focus, then press the rest of the way down. Move so that you are in the scene. The Self Timer light blinks slowly for 8 seconds (then quickly for 2 seconds) before the picture is taken. The camera "clicks" when the picture is captured. To turn off the shutter sound, see page 64. The Self Timer turns off after you take the picture or if you change modes. To cancel the Self Timer before the picture is taken, press the Self Timer button. (The Self Timer setting remains active.) To turn off the Self Timer, press the Self Timer button twice.

2. Press the SELF-TIMER button until the desired mode indicator displays on the LCD monitor.
