Philips 50" rear projection- Washed out picture.

I bought this set exactly 2 years ago. The picture started getting washed out about 2 weeks ago and has been getting worse almost daily. Dark scenes look normal or close to normal while anything lighter looks washed out or completely white. It is almost as if everything (except the darkest scenes) looks like a movie dream sequence. I opened up the back and cleaned the bulbs and mirror and it did not help. I changed cable boxes thinking that might be the problem- no change. I also have a possibly unrelated problem- the picture changing from color to black and white for a few seconds every couple of minutes- this only happens on channel 2. I am close to taking it outside and throwing it off the 15 foot deck. Please help before I put I big dent in my driveway.

You need to change the CRT Fluid. This is a common problem on the  older projection TV sets.
You can get the fluid and instructions on how to change it from www.TvRepairKits.com.

Colors on my TV seem to be washed out. Convergence is adjusted OK, brightness/color/tint settings don't seem to make a difference. I seem to have bright halos around all light colored images.

The fluid in the picture tubes needs replaced. It is a job for a professional. It usually costs about $250.00 for the job. You might say it's like giving your set an oil change.

Philips Magnavox 9P5031C 50-Inch Projection TV has a red/orange blur the whole picture is blurry

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Picture shrinks to only show top half

This is a common problem on certain models of Philips Magnavox TV sets. The most common symptom is the screen will shrink and expand over and over. After the TV heats up for a while the video will work like normal. After a few weeks or months your TV will eventually stop working and not have video. You can get complete parts and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com

Philips 60" rear projection needs warm up time

Sounds like your regulator ic is about to go, not an expensive repair but you have a good thought about buying a new set. If your fluid has never been changed I bet it's due also. Give the choice serious thought.

Philips

if you bought it under one year ago then the retailer should be obliged to either replace it or repair it. I would look into this further, ask to speak to the manager or something casue when a tv switches itself off it indicates an error inside and turns itself off to prevent further damage.

Blurry picture

The CRT fluid in the blue and green tube are most likely clouded. The set is still good. You just need to replace the fluid. Check with the site www.TvRepairkits.com - they are working on developing a fluid kit that includes a photo instuction quide.
