I would avoid using Silica gel litter in a kittens litter box and wait until they are slightly older. Young kittens are prone to tasting cat litter (simply out of curiosity). Silica crystals can be harmful if ingested and for this reason alone should not be used.

Silica gel is a porous granular form of sodium silicate, that has the highest absorbency of any litter, and has excellent moisture control and complete odor elimination. I'm using it for a while and I advise you to try it out, you won't regret it.
