You should have enough litter to allow your cat to easily cover any waste it leaves behind. Make sure that there is enough so that they don't feel the bottom of the litter box. You should give your cat a minimum of a 2 inch base of litter in the box.

I like the scoopable kind. Then each day you just scoop out the waste and put it in small plastic bag and throw it in the trash. About every month or so, dump the box, clean it and refill with clean litter. If you use the ordinary clay litter just put a little in the box and dump the whole thing each day.

You should buy a plastic mat to put in front of the litter box. This will catch most, if not all of the overflow litter.

Is there any chance you have recently switched brands of litter? Cats can be extremely particular when it comes to what kind of litter you put in their litter box. If you find one that works, you should stick with it. No need to fix something that isn't broken.
