The general rule of thumb in regards to litter box quantity is one plus one - one litter box per cat plus one extra.

Training you cat to use a litter box

For the most part, learning to use a litter box is instinctive for cats; however sometimes they may need a little extra coaching along the way. The following are some tips to help you train your cat to using a litter box successfully.

• Place your cat in the litter box after every nap, meal, play session or any other time your cat appears inclined to relieve itself

• While litter box training try leaving a small amount of waste in the litter box so the scent can act as a reminder to your cat as to what the box is for

• Find a good location - away from high traffic areas; preferably somewhere your cat can access at any time of day/night

• Do not place the litter box near your cats food or water

• Never punish your cat for having an accident outside the litter box. Instead I recommend firmly saying NO and then placing your cat in their litter box and praising them. This way they will begin to associate positive reinforcement with the litter box as opposed to negative associations.

• If you have multiple cats, you should have multiple litter boxes. Like us, cats want their privacy too

There are a few things you can do to prevent your dog from being attracted to your cats litter box. First and foremost, you should try to remove your cats waste as quickly as possible. You can also try sprinkling some meat tenderizer onto your cats food before ingestion. This will help make the smell of your cats ***** less enticing to your dog. Lastly, I would recommend placing your cats litter box somewhere that your dog cannot reach it; possibly by raising the litter box or placing it in a room only accessible through a small cat door.

Why is clumping cat litter better than clay litter?

Neither one is better than the other, they are based on preference. More people prefer to use clumping cat litter. Although clay litter is cheaper and absorbs well, clumping cat litter offers more advantages in my opinion. Clumping cat litter is much friendlier to the environment, seeing as you do not need to throw away the whole litter box every time your cat releases waste. It is easy to dispose of your cats waste products and helps to diminish the amount of odors.

How much litter should I put in the litter box?

You should have enough litter to allow your cat to easily cover any waste it leaves behind. Make sure that there is enough so that they don't feel the bottom of the litter box. You should give your cat a minimum of a 2 inch base of litter in the box.

I would recommend adding a small amount of the new litter in with the older product. Slowly you can start adding more and more newer product to the litter box until your cat receives the change without any problems.

Is there any chance you have recently switched brands of litter? Cats can be extremely particular when it comes to what kind of litter you put in their litter box. If you find one that works, you should stick with it. No need to fix something that isn't broken.
