Question about Sunpak Auto 555 TTL Flash

Using a Sunpak 555 with Cybersync transmitters with a canon 40D off camera and getting inconsistent firing

Using Energizer 2300 mAh fully charged batteries. Fires normal and consistent a few times then it does what it wants to.

Your strobe is faulty and needs repair at a trained service center. The actual culprit may be the voltage converter circuit that supplies the high voltage to the flash capacitor, or the voltage divider that drives the ready lamp and, at the same time, makes triggering possible.

SOURCE: Sunpak ring flash problem

I had a DX-12R for some time several years ago until it was stolen. I loved it. I recently purchased a used 8R and it is fine but I still like the 12R better. Especially the preview light feature. Ok. Make sure the batteries are all good, one bad apple does spoil the whole bunch. Check your cord connections and finally make sure the hot shoe connection is clean. That last one was usually the culprit when I had problems. Note that your hot shoe on your camera could also be going bad. I had a Ricoh that did that, I thought it was the flash. Good luck.

SOURCE: Sunpak 383 problem

Try to trigger it by shorting Center of shoe mount and the side terminal with a small wire.If it is firing the flash is ok.
If not there is open connection in the sync jack ,due to repeated inserting of sync chord. The springy part inside is not going back to its normal position.
You can fix it your self by opening it(adapter only)
.If you are new to this take a photo of the wiring immediately after opening the shoe adapter to see the position if any wire breaks later on.
Do not give up .383 is great flash

SOURCE: Sunpak 622 Recycle Time w/ Batteries vs AD-26

I have made Nimh pack which has 2900MAH cells and is very fast recycling. But beware that it will heat up Xenon(it needs cool down time before you fire full power repeatedly. Also its capacitor will be short life due to electrolytic(Same as fast battery chargers ruins the battery life).
And when its production is seized,I care it more.

Just bought a second hand Canon Powershot SX100 IS.

Try cleaning the battery contacts in the camera first with a pencil eraser and then with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Remote Firing of Flash Units

The EOS 40D does not have a transmitter built in. The remote flash units must be set to "Slave" and the on-camera external flash unit (eg Speedlite 580EX) or transmitter (ST-E2) set to "Master". Note that the Speedlite 430EX doesn't have the function to act as Master and you need a minimum or the 580EX or a ST-E2 speedlite transmitter (or similar) as Master/s.
