I also have the same problem after checking the Canon web site I found a page which deals with this problem By:

1.) Press the "Of" button to power down the Printer

2.) Remove USB cable.

3.) Remove Power cable.

4.) Waite 3-5 Minutes.

5.) Re-connect USB cable.

6.) Re-cone ct Power cable.

7.) Press "On" Button.

And all should be seet, not in  my case the blasted

red alarm is on and the error message returns again.

Anybody knows how to fix this blusted problem???

    Hi Robert!

Have fixed my red light problem, opened the Printer Cover and the two doors to get to the print head as I noticed that the machine on start up

wanted to move the head but could not and this caused the red light to come on.

I pulled the print head to the left to have a look if any dried ink would be the cause of sticking but could not see any but I noticed the two foam ink-pads which collect the ink when the head is being cleaned I checked with a cotton tip how dry the pads where and lo and behold the cleaning

mechanism popped down, it must have been stuck in the up position and

ergo caused the Red Alarm light to come on, and no unplugging of the cables and restarting would have fixed this.

Anyhow I moved the head to the right again and started the printer, after the head reset it self to the right position it started a cleaning process and the red light disappeared, I did a test print and re-alignment test and all is now sweet again.

    Good luck

As per Bill Slow's suggestion I played around with the ink pads. Not sure exactly what I touched but they popped up. I think I was around some little plastic flaps at the front of the pads.

I manually moved the print head a little, shut the printer and re-powered it.

It reported foreign material in way of print head. So I opened and moved it again, closed it up and again re-powered it.

I did notice when I re-opened it the pads werre back down so I think it was the same problem that Bill reported.

Seems to be working fine now.

Note I did get ink on my fingers during the exercise. A bit of washing powder has cleaned them up. Funny that it dries everywhere else but on the pads!

Regards...Len

I am having trouble changing the cartridge on the printer. The

im so sorry for the inconvineince that your having on this printer but let me help you.
if :
Red paper.jpg paper and red inkout1.jpg ink light flash alternately and green power.jpg power light is off possible problem: Paper may be blocking movement of the print head. Turn off the printer, then open the cover and remove any jammed paper or other foreign objects. Turn the printer back on again. If the lights are still on, that means the printer is having a hardware issue if: Green power.jpg power light is off; red paper.jpg paper and inkout1.jpg ink lights flash (quickly) possible problem: The printer may have an internal error. Turn off the printer, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. If the lights are still flashing , that means the printer is having a hardware issue

In canon pixma ip1700 Alarm light orange flashes 15 times

Fifteen Flashes: The FINE Cartridge cannot be recognized.
Possible causes are as follows:
- The FINE Cartridge may not be installed properly.
- The FINE Cartridge may not be compatible with this printer.
Install the appropriate FINE Cartridge. If lines are misaligned or the resulting output is not satisfactory, carry out the Print Head Alignment.

There are actually some certain meaning on the red light and green light showing different information to user. The summaries are:
1) Green On, Red Off = Printer Ready.
2) Green Fast-Flashing, Red Fast-Flashing = Printer warm up.
3) Green Fast-Flashing, Red Off = Printer off-line.
4) Green Slow-Flashing, Red Off = Processing Data.
5) Green Off, Red On = Cover Opened, Toner Empty or Developer Unit / Drum unit missing.
6) Green Off, Red Fast-Flashing = Paper Jam or waiting for jam reset.
7) Green Off, Red Slow-Flashing = Paper Empty or Paper tray is not inserted.
8) Green Off, Red Off = Printer power is off.
9) Green Very-Slow-Flashing, Red Off = Printer in sleep mode.
10) Green (any condition above), Red Slow-Flashing = Toner low or paper empty.

So what is your printer condition? Better know what is going on your printer so can solve the problem.
