How to access convergence board on 60" Philips?

Hi, Looks like the convergence unit on my 60pp9401 needs repair. R and B look good but convergence on G is messed up. The color has a bowed effect. I think it's probably the ICs but I'm not sure. In any event, how do I access the convergence board, where is it? I've removed the back housing so I can see the RGB lamps. Thanks, Jay

First thig you are going to need is the service manual, as this will have the disassembly instructions and the alighnment you will need to adjust after the board is repaired or replaced. there will be two IC's that should both be replaced at the same time. they will start with STK and will be soldered onto the printed circuit board and mounted up against a large metal heatsink.. These ICs can be replaced, but if you have no soldering skills or no experience working on Printed circuit boards, the entire board is available at http://www.ptscorp.com/tech_support.html. Good Luck

I own a 60PP9401 60 in. Rear projection tv. My red convergance was way out of line. I placed tv in the shop a while back, cost me $300 to get it fixed! Got set home, red still out of line, but not as bad. My...

This set has an advanced menu for adjusting the convergence and what may have happened is the shop adjusted it (It is done with an original Philips remote) and then not SAVED THE ADJUSTMENTS INTO THE SET'S MEMORY.

I can if you have the remote get into the menu and adjust and SAVE the adjustments. If the set is HD the convergence will have to be adjusted two times, once in regular and once in HD.

Let me know if you have questions.

I have a phillips 60 in rear projection tv model #60PP9401. and it is exhibiting the appearance of double vision, can this be fixed economically

Projection TV sets have two very common problems oulined below.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • No Audio/Video - TV Makes Chirping Sound

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

Has yellow and blue and numbers and words are double

You probably got a convergence issue. What that is is when the RGB is out of allignment witch causes one color to show more the an other or vice versa. You going to have to have a repair guy come out and look at it.

Thanks hope this helps.

Convergence

This set is made by Hitachi and uses two STK392-110, Sanyo amps to control convergence. You have likely one amps that is shorted causing the problem, but it's HIGHLY recommended that you replace both amps. Also it uses 1.8 ohm 1w resistors, out in front of the amps, for the yoke return circuit and one or more of them may need to be replaced if they are beyond tolerance.
For this job you need a soldering station, VU meter with a ohms test, desoldering braid and a skill level of 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Anything 5 or above would be a category of someone schooled in electronics.
If you need to find a tech in your area I suggest http://www.tvrepairpros.com/

Hope this helps!

Convergence / Short? 60PP9401

First thing to know = your set is Hitachi made with Philips
name on it....not a bad thing, just good to know.....
Parts to change out = STK392-110 IC's sub to upgrade
STK394-160E part # CZ 01341 , change both for reliability...
Then activate Intellisense and see if all is well........T.

Phillips 60pp9401

This set uses two convergence packs that go bad and take with them a resistor or two. You will need a repar shop to get it fixed. If it's over 10 years old, I would suggest getting a new HDTV set as these sets can start going downhill fairly rapidly past this age. If that's not an option, the repair could run over $350 IMHO.
