DVD problem my combo drive reads CD but when i put DVD it does not read. it shows that there is no Disc in it

I have the same problem. A cd/dvd combo drive but it seems not able to detect a DVD disc in the drive. I've sent it for a replacement when it was under warranty. I did not try it immediately after I got the replacement as I seldom play DVD. However, the same problem prevails and it's passed the warranty period.

You can try to clean the lens with some lens cleaners that are available almost anywhere. But it's most likely that the DVD laser is no longer working. (there are different lasers for DVD and CD just to let you know...) With DVD combo drives going down so fast in price, it might be better to just upgrade to a DVD combo lightscribe burner. (I paid $40 for one last week)

I HAD same exact problems, not reading dvds, i updated firmwares 1.02, then 1.03 and no change, was replaced inside the warranty twice. no change, so conclusion: STAW AWAY FROM IT!!

SOURCE: my dvd combo does not read dvd

There are separate lasers for CD reading, and for DVD reading. This is why it is possible to have a drive that reads only CDs but not DVDs, or the other way around. And your particular combo unit seems to have a lot of these problems. Since the drive doesn't work it's almost definitely a problem with the drive itself (I'm assuming that there is nothing wrong with the discs you tried to read). If that drive is still covered by a warranty period, send it back for repairs. Otherwise, I can't see the harm in trying to tinker with it yourself as the DVD portion of it is dead anyways. Ummm, on a side note...CompUSA is going out of business and they are selling things cheap. I got a DVD lightscribe burner for $40...booyah!

if the size of the disc is showing 0 bytes and dvd is not read, try cleaning the lens of the drive and if it does not read the dvd, then try upgrading the firmware of the drive from

I have a Sony CRX320E CD/DVD unable to write a DVD

CD-RW drives can only read all CD-rom and CD-RW formats and read DVD formats but cannot write to a DVD, if you want to write a DVDs you need to buy a DVD-RW burner which can burn all CD-formats

My Lite-On combo sohc-5236v does not read CD but it reads DVD.

The reason for this is most likely Copyright protection. If this is the case, it will read DVDs as it is only a DVD-ROM, but what happens in the case of CDs, is that they recognise the drive as a Burner, and the Copyright that is embedded into the CD wont let the drive read it. This also happens with DVDs in some DVD burners.

The way to test this, is by getting a CD-RW disc that has music or files on it, put it in the drive, and see if it reads it. If it doesn't, then you may have a fault with the drive, but if it does read the CD-RW, then the only way round it that I know of, is to buy a CD-ROM drive and use both drives.

My dvdrom drive wont let me access the drive

ITs a dvd rom drive. It will not burn blank dvds
in order to burn, it has to cd-r/cd-rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw. If a drive cannot write to a blank disc, it will eject it. Rom drives read only (Read Only Memory), Combo drives- burn cd's only read dvd's, and super drives both read and write to cds and dvds.

DVD problem

DVD's come in two kinds of media. There is -r and +r. check the disk you are trying against the drive letters your drive has on the front and be sure they are compatible. Also check the manufacturer's website for the latest drivers. Always try different brands of media, especially if you have burned DVD's instead of purchased ones.
