Question about Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB 7200rpm EIDE 100MB/s 8MB Internal) ATA-100 Hard Drive

1 Answer

My new Western Digital Desktop PATA EIDE 3.5 Inch Internal 250GB Hard Drive only shows 127GB on My Computer. I am running XP SP3 with IDE Connectors. Is the Mother Board too old to handle that many GB's? Can I partition the hard drive? Any solutions would be appreciated. Thanks.

The motherboard BIOS most likely have a hard drive size limit. Yes you can create two or mare partitions to use the rest of the hard drive space.
Go to Control Panel - Administrator Tools - Disk Manager to create a partition and format this partition.

SOURCE: Maxtor Internal EIDE hard drive dip switch settings.

I assume you have two IDE controllers? IDE1 and IDE2, I'll try to help, the primary HD needs to have the pin set to primary and the secondary set to slave, if you're running both of these drives off of the same ribbon cable. You may have to go into your BIOS settings and check to make sure the Primary HD is the WD drive.

Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

While trying to install PATA 250GB HD (XP Pro) only 130GB recognized. Upgraded BIOS to v1.4 (latest) and assured by Toshiba that this would enable computer to handle 250GB. No such luck. Accessed BIOS...

According to the detailed specs on that model, it came with a 60GB ATA-5 EIDI hard drive. therefore, you can use any ATA compatible (ATA-5, ATA-6 or ATA-100) EIDE/IDE drive that has jumpers enabling you to configure the drive as "Master". Western Digital Blue Scorpio and Seagate Momentus lines both have models that will fit the bill. You can find those drives at your neighborhood BestBuy or Staples pretty easily. I don't know if the A25 BIOS supports 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA), in spite of what toshiba says, If it only supports 24-bit LBA the maximum drive size is 137GB. If it supports 48-bit LBA then you can go as high as you can find drives available; usually 500GB. I suspect that it supports 48-bit LBA because various online vendors list up to 250GB drives for that model. The most important thing about the drive, though, is that it MUST be jumperable as 'master'. A cable select only drive won't work. Both the Western Digital and Seagate EIDE models have jumpers. hope this helps but if you need anything else just ask:)

Where is the best place to get a new hard drive for a sony vaio pcg-frv25? I need a ide pata hard drive.

You're on the right track--it doesn't need to be custom-manufactured for Sony notebooks--just needs to be an internal mobile IDE-PATA hard drive. Still, I would recommend at least looking for something name brand with a decent warranty. Amazon and Newegg.com both have the Western Digital WD2500BEVE (250GB) for $79.99. That's a decent price (not mind-boggling), but more importantly it's a solid size/price reference point--e.g., if you find a 500GB name-brand hard drive for the same price, pull the trigger immediately.

Install a partition manager program like
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
open it and you will see the entire hard disk. In there either create another partition in the unallocated space or add it to the D partition.

I just bought a hard drive from ebay as a second drive its a western digital 250gb ide drive but my pc will not recognise it as a storage device but it installed the drivers! what am i doing wrong?

Hi:
often when you install a IDE driv ne that is as big as yours, you often need to run the WD installation software first. The easy way is to go to the WD website and download WD Data lifeguard tools program. you can try running it with that drive as a slave, or you can just install your new drive by itself, and go from there

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.
