Question about Philips DVP5140 DVD Player

I need a motor assembly for a philips dvd player

I've already taken apart the player to see what was happening and i know it's not spinning the disc, the lens does try to read the disc though. I've been trying to find the motor assembly for a while now and can't seem to find anywhere that sells it.

I used to repair dvd and cd players, the motor wont spin until the laser focuses on the disc, so you could have a faulty laser. also the mechanism sometimes comes as a complete assembly. which will cost more than anew unit

Hi kjones1021,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.
Assuming that the disc is good.
1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust and any fine foreign objects the optical lens can't read any disc. If you have a DVD Lens cleaner, play it to the unit. If this is not available you may manually clean the optical lens. Open the cover and gently clean the eye of the lens by smooth, clean, soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this, just a gentle stroke only.
2.Check the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc, this is because of the movement of the optical lens back-and-forth. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the spindle motor - Check the spindle motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : Most of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Also, check if your unit is under warranty period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Don't attempt to open the cover(it will void the warranty).

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!

Hi,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem. I've suspected that you're spindle motor (Steps #3) is already faulty. Below is the steps that will guide you fixing it yourself.

DVD player will not recognize any DVDs I put into player. I even took top off and cleaned laser eye and still does not play. Now red light is on in place of green power light. What's up with this thing?...

No disc error can be a DIY like the following steps.

Assuming that the disc is good.

Since you've already done the #1 now proceed to #2.

1.Cleaning the lens. - Sometimes because of dust the lens can't read any disc.

Try clean the lens by soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this.

2.Replacing the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser.

Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin.

Bad motor - reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : 50% of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.

Magnavox dp100mw8b will not read any discs i put in. be it brandnew discs, scratched discs, or burnt discs. It worked two days ago and now nothing. I've already cleaned it, now what? this is the second one...

The lens pickup is damaged and must be replaced. often the soldering joints on wiring to lens pickup are broken, or the lens is scratched. The unit must be taken apart and fixed by a technician.

RCA DVD player model DRC105N that won't read discs anymore

If the DVD is not reading any CD, then it is often a lens problem.

If th lens cleaner does not work the unit must be taken apart, to clean the lens pickup with isopropyl alcohol and soft cotton tips.

In some case is necessary to replace the lens pickup, as this is defective.
