Problem started with engine light & code p0720 stay on, O/D OFF light flashing and stay on, speedometer dead. Replaced Output speed sensor, erased code p0720, speedometer worked when car running above 30km/hr. for approx 1/2 day. Speedometer dead again with O/D OFF light flashing, car not picking up speed and not responsive. How to fix? Do I have to replace also the input/turbine speed sensor? Your advices please

the speedo is electronic, not cable, this problem is caused by a sticking stepper motor that moves the needle, a stepper motor is a miniature electric motor that can move and hold one position, this was a common problem at the dealer I worked at, u will need to pull the speedo and send it out for repair, I use the following link for this service.

Your speed sensor, is located on top of the transaxle, near the starter. To access it, remove the battery, then remove the battery tray (4 10mm bolts). You will see wires coming from the lower oxygen sensor, and they snap into the bracket that holds the speed sensor in place. The actual speed sensor has a 2 wire clip on it, and is held in place by the bracket and a 10mm bolt.

Well our escorts are built in liverpool uk and valencia here in spain, and if this is the problem with the autos many thanks for the info as it always comes in handy providing that i can remember it all .When you are a general mechanic like myself and not a dealer only so to speak ,then you have to fault find as you go along and work from basics. Now this is all very well on older vehicles but some of these new ones i cant evan change a battery without the immobiliser cutting in.Some of the newer mercs and VWs i cant evan change the oil or the brake pads without the immobiliser coming on.Also please dont mention the real bane of my life -----RENAULTS---and encrypted software .How these cars do in the states where the OBDII plug is connected into the car to test the emmisions ,with their renault only plug connector layout and encrypted software that would do mossad or the cia proud i can only wonder ??

A code P0500 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. Next, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the speed sensor. The location of the sensor depends on your vehicle. The sensor could be on the rear axle, transmission, or perhaps the wheel hub (brake) assembly. If the wiring and connectors are OK, then check the voltage at the speed sensor. Again, the exact procedure wil depend on your make and model of vehicle. If everything looks OK, replace the sensor.
