Look at your memory card. SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Camera shows write protect when open

When what is open? Always keep the battery / memory card door closed. If it is not closed correct, the camera won't work as expected. To protect the file system, when someone should pul out the memory card, while the camera is accessing the memory, it will or shut down completely, or at least protect the memory card against writing to it.
Before opening the battery / memory card cover, always make sure the camera is completely shut off. That means no light is allowed to burn or flicker. The memory card can also be write protected (SD cards) when the lock switch is down like in the picture on the 32GB card.
Before you can make any picture the switch on the card should be up like on the 64GB card on the picture. 3635bcf4-65df-478c-a04d-92e341d15860.jpg

I want to delete protected pictures

If the picture on the camera is protected, unprotect the picture first. In playback mode, scroll to the protected picture, then press the AE-L/AF-L button on the back of the camera.

If the memory card is protected, take the card out of the camera. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Canon PowerShot SX20 IS Digital Camera keeps giving me a memory card error. The memory card is a 4gig PNY memory card (lower budget)

Make sure the slide switch on the side of the card is unlocked. Your camera may just want you to format the card in the camera. Download any pics from it first using a card reader if necessary.

When you take the card out, you are storing the pictures on the camera's extremely small internal memory. Is the slide switch on the side of the card in the unlocked position?

Write protect message appears on screen

Sounds as if the memory card may be corrupted. In order to remove the write protect, make sure you have downloaded and saved all of the images from the memory card to your computer and then having the card in the camera you will need to run the format option and this will permanently remove the write protect as well as all of the images from the card.
The card should be able to be used again after the write protect is removed.

Saving pictures

The camera has a very limited storage space on itself. It probably isnt saving the pictures on the card because the card is write protected (probably on accident)
just pull out the card and on it is a tiny little switch. just push that into the next position and it is no longer write protected. the write protection is there to prevent you from losing your photos, to put more photos on it you will have to deactive the protection with that switch, its usually white colored
