I hope I can help you since so much time has passed. This is a rather common problem with the SDMX1 and that is because the headphone jack was installed with too little solder. Here is what you do.
1. Dismantle the player by removing 3 screws ( 2 at one end and 1 at the other).
2.Carefully pry the end caps away.they should pop off.
3.lift the upper half of the case from the joystick end gently.
4.lift the entire circuitboard out. watch where the battery terminals are.
5.look at the headphone jack where it is installed on the smaller circuitboard.
6.on both left and right sides of the jack down on the circuitboard you will see 2 solder connections.
7.these are for the left and right channels.
8.if you look carefully (you might need a magnifying glass), you will probably see a very small break in the connection.
9.using a pointed soldering iron (no soldering gun here!), simply resolder BOTH connections using a very small amount to solder. This will most likely solve your problem.
10.put everything back together and it's as good as new. VERY EASY.

If you have not downloaded any music into it, you won't be able to play it however, the FM radio should work. Dowmload the instructions from www.sandisk.com These 32 pages will explain everything!

Volume Control

First go to www.sandisk.com and download the instructions for this particular mp3 player. I'm guessing it's the SDMX1. Look for this model and get the instructions. They're about 30 plus pages. Volume is adjusted very easily-Look at your SDMX1 with the data screen to your right and headphone plug to the right.
1.find the joystick control-it sticks up and is chrome plated.
2.imagine it is a compass with North-up
3.simply move the joystick North for louder volume and South for lower volume.
4.you can also read the volume numbers on the screen in the right lower quadrant. they go from 1-40. Good luck.
If you ever have headphone problems with sound from only one earphone, let me know. I know how to fix this better than new! Also, if the play-on/off switch becomes hard to operate, this fix is also very simple.

Sandisk MP3 player SDMX1 - bad headphone connector

I have the same trouble. I ended up taking the 3 screws out, then I used a flat screwdriver to pry open the end pieces. Note from the top that there is a line where the end pieces connect. Pry off both end pieces - then you can separate top and bottom. HOWEVER, once you get in, it will be apparent that this is not very hacker friendly in there. There is a daughter-board with the microphone and headphone adapter and its epoxied in there. If anyone is successful in determining how to fix the headphone jack, please add!!!

Opening Case for Repair, Defective Head Phone Port

I had the same problem with my SanDisk SDMX1 player. After you remove the battery you can slide down the two plastic endcaps of the MP3 player shell (one end has the headphones and microphone and the other end has the usb input). After you slide both of them off the player can be pulled apart into the two peices of the outer shell and the internal "guts." The spot to resolder was hard to get to with a conventional soldering iron. Since I didn't have one I just heated up a paper clip tip on the stove to red hot and pressed it to the area that needed soldering and rubbed on the solder. My MP3 player now works fine (I was amazed it worked) If you need more detail please ask.
