I flashed my NEC RW ND-3540A dual layer burner, with a firmware update (ND-3540A 1.04).Prior to that I tried (to be honest) some other firmware updates from Liggy's and Dee's website, and now, my system recognizes my drive and in the device manager it reports it to be working properly, but it cannot read any disc at all. The reason I tried flashing it in the first place, was because it was working fine one minute and then the next minute, it tells me that I should insert a disc in the drive, while a disc was already in it. After that it could not open any disc at all, but would auto-play a DVD movie when inserted. It would not open or play any form of CD.(NB. would not open for viewing any type of disc, but yet would play a DVD). Can this be fixed, or do I need a new drive? I tried different firmware up-daters that that says "update successful" but after restart I still have the problem. I did a final flash with ver. 1.04.
There are 2 lasers, one for CD and one for DVD. Most likely, your DVD laser is not working right. The new firmware update only supported more media: http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/7669/ (link to update and details) DVD burners are cheap now a days (I just got a DVD lightscribe burner for $40 at CompUSA...Who is also going out of business)

Same problem. Works sometimes, others it won't recognize a disc is in the drive (CD or DVD). Shows up in device manager. Uninstall/re-install doesn't help.
UPDATE: Drive is reading DVD's so I presume the CD laser is out.
Tried re-flashing with 1.04. Was going to try with 3520 and 3550 models firmware, but they will not flash a 3540.
