Does installing a KEM-400AAA require soldering?

My boyfriend got the dreaded 80010514 error code on a 40 GB PS3 he bought second-hand from an internet auction, less than a week after getting it. The seller originally told him he'd repair it for free if he'd ship it to him, but now refuses to reply with an address so he's stuck trying to find a fix for it himself.

He's surmised that it is indeed the laser that's the issue through research and what the machine sounds like when it's trying to read (I also believe he's made a comment that the blu-ray disc he got with the PS3 won't play), so he's decided to try replacing his blu-ray with a new KEM-400AAA blu-ray mechanism.

However, we've found some places that say there is a "soldering point" to prevent static that has to be removed (??? some people contradict this).

Does anyone know whether there is, if so, what sort of soldering iron is required (I read somewhere there are special anti-static soldering irons or some such).
Also, where is the point located if it does exist? He is buying the mechanism from a Chinese company and I'm not sure if he's going to get any instructions with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, there is no soldering involved with replacing a kem-400aaa. You can do this with just a screw driver.

Disc makes funny noises when loading and cant connect to the internet. i bought it at a pawn shop and dont know how to tell if there is anything wrong with it but the warrenty is voided.

Hi and welcome to FixYa

Ok for the internet problems try connecting it directly to your internet modem without the router and also try connecting it with the wireless option of the ps3, if none of those options works, your ps3 network card is pretty much fried. About the disc making funny noise you might want to first if you know nothing about ps3 take it to a repair store after the diagnostic of the funny noises the next symptom you are going to get is problems reading bluray discs and after that you will probably have to replace the WHOLE DRIVE piece or if you are lucky just the PS3 lens. here are links for more info about prices:

PS3 Whole Drive:

remember after buying any of those check your PS3 Model.

I have a ps3 with a kem400aca, it was made before 08 so it can with on laser i bought a new one and i was told the 2laser would work but having fitment problems

You must get the laser that is compatible with your system. ACA is an extension for the kem 410's. You have KES/KEM 410 ACA and then you have the KES/KEM 400AAA.

If you have a 'single eye' laser and trying to replace it with a 'dual eye' laser, it WILL NOT work.

My 60gb ps3 can play regular dvds and ps2 games but not any blue ray related games or movies. The blue ray movies or games will either play for a little then freeze not read the disc at all or give me an...

Okay, this is a REALLY common problem. It's more likely than not that dust is on your lens. Best bet is to buy a Laser Eye Cleaner disc and hope that fixes the problem. If not than you will have to contact sony. If your still under warranty they will fix it for free. if the warranty has expired, then they will charge you a repair fee

KEM-400AAA - Full Assembly, Single Lense Laser and Deck (20, 60, 1st gen 80gb)
KES-400AAA - Single Lense Laser Only

KEM-410ACA - Full Assembly,Double Lense Laser and Deck (40, 2nd gen 80gb)
KES-410A(KES-410ACA) - Double Lense Laser Only (40, 2nd Gen 80gb)

Ps3 won't play gameswhen disc is inserted and start-up begins, error message 'Error 80010504' appears

according to this article

http://news.softpedia.com/news/80010514-Error-Hits-PlayStation-3-83145.shtml

it may be bad sector on HD or bad firmware update... first thing I would do is try to rollback firmware or reupdate firmware... Then take a look at the HD.... you may also try resetting it back to start on settings menu however you will lose everything saved.

Disc reading problems

Gamerevolver.comrecently ran into the the dreaded 80010514 error shortly afterinstalling a new game they had purchased off the PlayStation Store anddecided to document it. Here is what the have to say…
Since this error occurred, we obviously contacted SonySupport. We were informed that the code is not common, and a simplereset of the system, and restoral of factory settings should do thetrick. Unfortunately, after the restoral, the error still occurred.
The error code is actually one of two things, a) afaulty sector on the internal hard drive, or b) a faulty installationof software/firmware, both iterations actually coincide with eachother. If the hard drive suffers a faulty sector ( a section of damaged spaceon the drive that data may have been written to that no longer isreadable), an installation may still be processed, and even work, butthe error can cause some serious side effects, such as option b. Ifyour PS3 has installed an item incorrectly, including firmware, it isin high risk of receiving this error.
Basically, what is occuring is the corruption of game discrecognition and execution. If you will notice, in 90% of all cases, thedrive will still play DVD and even Blu Ray movies with no problems. When trying to start a game however, the title, sooner or later, willreceive the error.
1) Ensure that your internet connection is stable. If you are using a wireless connection, make sure your signal is atleast a solid 80%. If not, make the proper adjustments until it is.
2) Dust your machine regularly. Any PS3 owner willtell you that the Playstation 3 is a dust magnet. Just run a dry clothover it every couple days, and you should be fine. This will helpprevent heat issues and shorts that may occur.
3) When installing firmware and/or software, makesure you follow the instructions. Even if you have installed 6 versionsprior, each one is different, and may require additional steps. Saveyourself the headache and just follow them, it only takes a minute orso longer to do it right.
Lets sum it all up, the error is not hardware related and is causeddue to corruption of firmware. Restoring you PS3 will not roll back thefirmware, and unfortunately will not fix the issue 9 times out of 10. If you are receiving this error, contact Sony for a replacement unit. Again I hope none of my readers have to see the dreaded 80010514 error and by following Gamerevolver.com’s simple steps your bound to prolongue the life of your PS3 indefinitely.

If u have access to another hard drive, try replacing the ps3 one with this one, if not, back to Sony it is.
