same thing happened to me i had to open my ps3 only cause warrenty was up but i bought a ps3 that got the ylod took that lens and put it in mine and that fixed it.
I have seen lasers burn out shortly after 1 year. They are available online for purchase. It would be the laser for sure if the system starts up fine, disks go into and out of the console and if there is an icon in top right of screen like it is trying to read. I have fixed a few but laser replacement usually cost $150. Good Luck
Call sony in this case as long as you do not open your console yet. before speak to them tell then that your ps3 is no longer reading discs they have been know to repair it for free.
It the laser gone most probably the KEM400aaa you can tell by the CECH**** code on the end of the serial number
If they will not repair for free it will be a cost of £99.00 or you can repair your self by replaceing the laser around £65.00
Try playing playstation home and sign in and then quickly press the center or middle ps button to see if the cd is there, if it is then there u go. this happend to me and i ended up not returning it for a fix!
