Hello! resently, my mp3 (iRiver T30) headphone jack stopped working. the unit works great but i cannot hear a thing. the strange thing is, i connect the mp3 player to the computer via the headphone jack and i can hear the music on the mp3 player through my computer. however, when i plug in ordinary headphones, all i hear is crackling sounds. i've tried several different headphones. and even checked the volumn on the unit. i know it's not a headphone problem. it's just strange.
can you please give me some suggestions and possible solution to this.

Re: cannot hear music
The bad news is that your headphone jack is most likely shot. The soldered connections inside are most likely broken. This is not repairable generally, at least not for a cost that would be reasonable. Music will play through your computer because it can be read off your player through the USB connection.
Use it as a data storage drive and buy a new one, or a used one. I've seen used T30s on Amazon for around $30 to $40.

I had this very same thing happen to me yesterday after listening to music with my headphones. After unplugging them, the speaker would no longer work nor the speakerphone.
After trying many things without success, I was finally able to resolve this by plugging back in the headphone cable and pushing the jack around a little bit to the side until I could hear sound.
I did this while trying to place an MP3 just to make it easier. So far this has worked fine. But now I am reluctant to use the headphones any more.
I know your post was several months ago so this may or may not be helpful.
I bought a used unit from ebay with the same problem (discovered later) and had to buy another as-is player, open it up, and replace the defective headphone jack module on the first player. see this forum for directions to open player: forum
plan b - sell the unit as-is on ebay and put your profits toward a 20gb refurb for $30-60 (from sellers like metromania)
download the updater. unzip the file and run the installation program. after you have install the iriver firmware updater, run the program. it will automatically detect what you need. follow the instructions. if the updater stops at 50% don't worry. wait bout a min or 2 then unplug your T30 and it will update by itself
