The power went out the other day and now I have the same problem. All three headsets say searching. The answering machine still works but nothing happens when I try to dial on the phones. I have tried unplugging the power cord as well as the phone cord to reset everything.

SOURCE: VTech 5.8 mhz won't work

I found a solution that fixed this problem (at least for me). On the vtech site they said to unplug the base unit for at least 5 minutes. Previously, I had only unplugged the base unit for a few seconds. This time, I left it unplugged for about 10 minutes or so and when I plugged it back in, everything was working fine. Apparently there is some sort of capacitor that must discharge long enough to completely remove power from the circuitry.

Good luck and I hope this works for you!

SOURCE: phone not connecting

I find that unplugging the base unit power for about 20 seconds, then replugging it, usually clears this problem.

SOURCE: Vtech ia5870 dual handsets model problem:

from the troubleshooting section of the manual

• Unplug the base unit’s electrical power and remove the battery from the handset. Wait for 15 seconds then plug in the battery place the handset in the base unit and plug in the power. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and base to synchronize

not a guarantee, something to try

SOURCE: My Phone will not connect to the base unit...

My handset displays CONNECTING...
Move the handset closer to the telephone base. You might have moved out of range.

This is what was listed in the Vtech Manual.

What I suggest is not just powering it off, but remove battery and wait a couple of minutes. Put battery back in and try it. The other thing I suggest is a new battery or switching it temporarily with a phone that works, to see if that helps before you buy a new one. If the battery is weak it will have trouble reaching the base.

SOURCE: i want to add an additional handset to my vtech phone...the new handset is "searching for base" and requests a 15-digit number which is suppose to be on the base--there is no 15-digit number to input.

The 15 digit number shoudl be on a sticker on the bottom of the base unit.

Thomson Skype phone CE21878GE5-A - OUT OF RANGE

Make sure the aerial is extended, most have one on the base unit. Resetting is achieved by remove all the batteries and mains plugs for an hour.

How do you reset a cordless landline phone?
Resetting a DECT phone.

  1. Disconnect the main base unit from the power supply and the telephone line.
  2. Remove the batteries from all of the handsets for approximately 1 hour.
  3. Re-insert the batteries into the handsets and power up the base unit.

My TRU9485 cordless phone is showing an E4 message after power was restored after an outage. Obviously not working.

Unfortunately, the E4 error is an internal hardware failure. You can try to reset the unit by unplugging the base station's power supply. Remove the phone line cord from the base. Finally remove the batteries from all of the handsets. Wait at least 15 minutes before you reconnect the power, batteries and telephone cable. Place one handset on the base. Wait one minute and check if the phone works.

If you see a message about searching for the base or out of range, then the problem is probably with the transmitter/receiver in the base. In any case, if the TRU9485 is still under warranty (one year), contact Uniden. Otherwise, replace the cordless phone system.

I hope this helps.

Red light indicating fone charging has not shut off for around 20 hours.

My Vtech 6.0 charging light only turns off when I remove a handset from the charger base. I have had these three set for two years and they work fine. I think that the red light is just to let you know that the charger is working, if you loose power, or unplug one of the base units there is no indication of a dead battery.

We had a power outage and now the answering machine displays an A that we can't get rid of. Now matter what we do the system no longer works.

Try unplugging the base unit and removing the batteries from all the handsets. Then put the batteries back in and plug in the base unit to see if that resets everything.

Searching for base

My long-term experience with these phones is that occasionally, they get themselves into some kind of weird state: this is usually indicated by the flashing "searching" message.

In all cases it's been cured by unplugging the power supply AND the phone-line (both simultaneously) from the base, waiting a few seconds, then re-connecting. Normally this sorts things out, but will require you to re-set time& date (the base can sometimes still derive power from the incoming 50v line). Batteries out of handsets is a last (addtional) resort. I've very rarely had to re-register.
