I have a RUUD upka-042JAZ heat pump. I noticed a problem in the winter, when it was not getting warm enough. A technician determined the outside unit (i'm assuming heat) was not coming on as it should. The heating elements within the inside unit were the only thing working. He also mentioned that I had the wrong thermotstat which was for a conventional AC and not a heat pump. He replaced the thermostat but the outside unit still did not come on. Winter was not that extreme last season so it really was not a problem. Because low and behold he never showed up again to finish the job. Now its summer and the unit outside does not come on. The pipes to the outside unit are normal air tempurature. (i'm assuming they should be hot) Anyway before he worked on it to fix the heat I know for a fact the outside unit was working. It may be just coincidence but not sure. Anyway the inside unit does come on but i suspect its just the blower because the air is room tempurature and not cold. Technician around here are hard to find. I think its part of the katrina rebound. I've also noticed a reset button on the outside unit (not sure what it does though). I have powered down everything (breakers) and pressed the reset button thinking that this might help. no luck though.

Re: Outside unit does not come on in Summer
YOUR MODEL HAS A 3-5 MIN.TIME DELAY RELAY IN THE CONDENSER CONTROL PANEL OUT-SIDE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX-IT YOURSELF ... THERE I SAID IT.
IT IS WIRED INTO THE 24VOLT CONTROL CIRCUIT. THEY DO GO BAD AND OFTEN.
IT IS THERE FOR A GOOD REASON. IT GIVES THE COMPRESSOR TIME FOR THE PRESSURES TO EQUALIZE INTERNALLY TO PREVENT "HARD START CONDITIONS".
RUUD HAS A GOOD WARRANTY ON ALL PARTS 5-6 YEARS I BELIEVE. IF IT IS THE TIMER IT IS INEXPENSIVE ANYWAY.

is it a heat pump? I would be suspect of the line voltage transformer have 24v. if transformer is not matched to line voltage you can have erratic problems their is an under lying problem. that is being missed find a good contractor . Tom
Hello Glenn. There are factory reps for Rheem/ Ruud and if the contractor and distributer can't solve your problem then a Rep needs to go to your house and take care of it. What type of Ruud unit do you have? I will need the model number and a description of what you mean by "keeping up". Also what State / Country are you in? Let me know as soon as you can and I'll see if I can help you out.
If your unit is blowing heat inside and it's not a heat pump. It will be most likely electric heat in your case.
Sounds like you have a split unit meaning the condenser is outside and the cooling and the heat features are inside or under your home.If your Rudd is a heat-pump the outside unit will cycle/blow cold air outside in winter and hot air will cycle/blow outside during the summer season. Now, if for some reason the heat is not coming on inside the house, would be the only reason that you would need to be concerned. Being a heat relay or breaker of could cause that problem. Hope this helps you, Sea Breeze
