Our Spacemaker XL 1800, all of a sudden, started making a whizzzzz kind of a noise (sort of something got loose inside) when we turn on the microwave. The noise mostly seems to come from the vent area above the top of the microwave door.
I took the vent cover off and found that the charcoal filter was slid down. But even after I put the charcoal filter in place the noise doesn't seem to go off.
What could be the problem? Is that something that I can fix by myself?

It could be that the "grinding" noise was actually "arcing" taking place inside the cavity or uder the cover. The magnatron is possibly damaged or the h.v. diode. Should be repaired by qualified repairman
I have the same problem on my oven- model JVM1640WB and called an appliance repairman who is honest and reliable (I've used him before). He said the problem is with the electrode, to fix it is roughly $300. He recommended buying a new microwave rather than fixing it.
