Question about Heating & Cooling
Brand New Heat Pump Compressor fan turns on, runs for a few minutes, gets loud, the proceeds to cycle compressor fan on and off for hours. ONLY happens at night. Outside temp 75, inside desired temp 70, model number FXM4X3600A. Recently replaced HVAC system of same capacity 3 months ago. Runs OK during the day, pressures OK according to engineer. Engineer cannot recreate issue and said to not run HVAC at night as solution. ha ha funny after 10k purchase 60 days ago.
What is the model number of the outdoor unit?

It is definitely with the compressor. It should more like you may have a weak winding in the compressor, you can a hard start capacitor (sp5 ) that will help the compressor on restart. Note that this is a last chance solution for a compressor.

YOUR OUTDOOR FAN MOTOR SHOULD NEVER SHUT OFF IN THE AC MODE. IT IS SUPPOSED TO SHUT OFF IN THE HEAT MODE WHEN ITS IN DEFROST. IF THE UNIT IS RUNNING IN COOL AND THE OUTSIDE MOTOR QUITS ,THE COMPRESSOR WILL QUIT SOON AFTER. EITHER THE RUN CAPACITOR FOR THE FAN IS BAD OR THE FAN MOTOR ITSELF IS BAD, IF CAP IS GOOD THEN THE MOTOR IS At FAULT. THE OUTDOOR PRESSURE SWITCH CAN ALSO OPEN IF THE INDOOR FAN MOTOR FAILS IN HEAT OR THE FILTER IS PLUM NASTY in heat OR THE INDOOR COIL IS PLUGGED UP in heat.. THE PRESSURE SWITCH USUALLY TRIPS AT 400 TO 425 SO ITS WORKING CORRECTLY. YOU MAY BE CONFUSING THE ISSUE SAYING THAT THE AIR IS HOT AND COLD INSIDE. IT IS COLD WHEN AC IS RUNNING HOT WHEN HEAT PUMP IS RUNNING IN HEAT BUT ESSENTIALLY not cold or hot if compressor isn't running, but a lot of folks describe the lack of cold air as hot when the compressor isnt running. but it basically is warm or house air temp.you test the capacitor with a capacitor tester or take it to motor shop and let them test it. odds are its a 5 , 7.5 or a 10. it should test within 10 % of rated value . ask for a RESCUE brand replacement motor. they are great ,reversable etc.carefully oil and sand the motor shaft and note exactly where the blade was located in relation to the grill so you get it back just the same. usually they wire up black to a leg of 220 power. white to the other leg of 220 power. brown and brown with white stripe to the capacitor.you can also pull whole fan shroud assembly on some units and take whole thing to motor shop and let them test motor cap, replace and all you do is return to unit and connect two power leads,

I recommend getting electric back up heat to fix your problem. Like the other gentleman said, defrost is having to kick on too much. It's doing the best it can givin the conditions outside. If you don't have enough power supply for electric back up heat, then a gas furnace or propane furnace will work also, depending on your needs. Heat Pumps are a like a full time fan, they are designed to heat your home at a steady rate unlike forced gas units that turn on extremely high temps and then shut off... Ensure your charge is correct, givin your tempatures the unit sounds to be working correctly, however a second opinion is always a good piece of mind before you spend money on emergency heat.. Hope that helps..

SOURCE: Electric Furnace Trips Breakers
it is normal for a breaker that is run right on the edge (50 amp and your furnance to use 45) to get weak after a while . the first thing you should do is change the breaker with the same type and amp rateing . it should take care if it

SOURCE: Blowing hot air, compressor not kicking on, just fan ? ?
are you speaking of the outside fan or inside? compressor should be a little warm but not boiling hot. the unit could be low on freon. if low it will run a while but the compressor will overheat and shut off leaving the fan running by itself ouside. if nothing outside is running check power. if you have power check the contacted outside to make sure it's pulled in. contacters are bad about going out on goodman untis. Also ants can get under contacts.

This unit is BRAND NEW inside and outside
All air filters are new
All vents and intakes are clean and clear; We are in summertime in California at this time; Heating is not being used, since I only need to cool the house at this time.; This has now started to happen in the daytime with the outside temp at 90, trying to reach 75 indoors.
