Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Brand New Heat Pump Compressor fan turns on then off after only seconds.

Brand New Heat Pump Compressor fan turns on, runs for a few minutes, gets loud, the proceeds to cycle compressor fan on and off for hours. ONLY happens at night. Outside temp 75, inside desired temp 70, model number FXM4X3600A. Recently replaced HVAC system of same capacity 3 months ago. Runs OK during the day, pressures OK according to engineer. Engineer cannot recreate issue and said to not run HVAC at night as solution. ha ha funny after 10k purchase 60 days ago.

All vents and intakes are clean and clear; We are in summertime in California at this time; Heating is not being used, since I only need to cool the house at this time.; This has now started to happen in the daytime with the outside temp at 90, trying to reach 75 indoors.

It is definitely with the compressor. It should more like you may have a weak winding in the compressor, you can a hard start capacitor (sp5 ) that will help the compressor on restart. Note that this is a last chance solution for a compressor.

SOURCE: High Pressure cutoff

YOUR OUTDOOR FAN MOTOR SHOULD NEVER SHUT OFF IN THE AC MODE. IT IS SUPPOSED TO SHUT OFF IN THE HEAT MODE WHEN ITS IN DEFROST. IF THE UNIT IS RUNNING IN COOL AND THE OUTSIDE MOTOR QUITS ,THE COMPRESSOR WILL QUIT SOON AFTER. EITHER THE RUN CAPACITOR FOR THE FAN IS BAD OR THE FAN MOTOR ITSELF IS BAD, IF CAP IS GOOD THEN THE MOTOR IS At FAULT. THE OUTDOOR PRESSURE SWITCH CAN ALSO OPEN IF THE INDOOR FAN MOTOR FAILS IN HEAT OR THE FILTER IS PLUM NASTY in heat OR THE INDOOR COIL IS PLUGGED UP in heat.. THE PRESSURE SWITCH USUALLY TRIPS AT 400 TO 425 SO ITS WORKING CORRECTLY. YOU MAY BE CONFUSING THE ISSUE SAYING THAT THE AIR IS HOT AND COLD INSIDE. IT IS COLD WHEN AC IS RUNNING HOT WHEN HEAT PUMP IS RUNNING IN HEAT BUT ESSENTIALLY not cold or hot if compressor isn't running, but a lot of folks describe the lack of cold air as hot when the compressor isnt running. but it basically is warm or house air temp.you test the capacitor with a capacitor tester or take it to motor shop and let them test it. odds are its a 5 , 7.5 or a 10. it should test within 10 % of rated value . ask for a RESCUE brand replacement motor. they are great ,reversable etc.carefully oil and sand the motor shaft and note exactly where the blade was located in relation to the grill so you get it back just the same. usually they wire up black to a leg of 220 power. white to the other leg of 220 power. brown and brown with white stripe to the capacitor.you can also pull whole fan shroud assembly on some units and take whole thing to motor shop and let them test motor cap, replace and all you do is return to unit and connect two power leads,

SOURCE: Heat Pump Stops Working only in the Early Morning

I recommend getting electric back up heat to fix your problem. Like the other gentleman said, defrost is having to kick on too much. It's doing the best it can givin the conditions outside. If you don't have enough power supply for electric back up heat, then a gas furnace or propane furnace will work also, depending on your needs. Heat Pumps are a like a full time fan, they are designed to heat your home at a steady rate unlike forced gas units that turn on extremely high temps and then shut off... Ensure your charge is correct, givin your tempatures the unit sounds to be working correctly, however a second opinion is always a good piece of mind before you spend money on emergency heat.. Hope that helps..

SOURCE: Blowing hot air, compressor not kicking on, just fan ? ?

are you speaking of the outside fan or inside? compressor should be a little warm but not boiling hot. the unit could be low on freon. if low it will run a while but the compressor will overheat and shut off leaving the fan running by itself ouside. if nothing outside is running check power. if you have power check the contacted outside to make sure it's pulled in. contacters are bad about going out on goodman untis. Also ants can get under contacts.

You may have a compressor failure, due to the failure of the fan.
Have you tried turning the fridge off for a few hours and re-starting it?
If the compressor then starts without any unusual noises, it might just be overheated, and a replacemaent fan will cure it.
Otherwise, it looks like a new compressor and fan will be needed.

BUZZING NOISE FROM MY HEAT PUMP

Take a look at this YouTube page that explains with good videos what are some of the common problems with heat pump noise. The one that seems dominant is the defrost cycle a heat pump goes thru when it melts ice off the evaporative coils. In defrost cycle, The compressor runs but the cooling fan does not, so you will hear a loud buzzing sound and the unit sounds like it is stalled...because only the compressor is running to generate heat to melt coil ice.

There is a loud humming coming from outside unit, the fan is not rotating.

Your question does not include what type of system you are asking about, but the assumption is that it is a heat pump. The loud humming is the compressor running by itself while the fan is off.

This is the typical way a reasonably new heat pump operates:
There is a coil temperature sensor that initiates a defrost period to eliminate the frost/ice build up on the outdoor coil. In the defrost mode, the outdoor fan shuts off and the reversing valve in the heat pump reverses the direction of refrigerant flow to warm the outdoor coil. The same coil temperature sensor senses the temperature of the external surface of the coil and tells the defrost control when the frost is gone initiating another 'reverse cycle' to put it back into heating mode. In the heating mode, the outdoor fan runs again.

If you have the heat pump installed where snow drifts accumulate, you will have a problem extracting heat from the outdoor air, and coil frosting and freezing will be exaggerated. If you have excessive ice build up due to a defosting issue, the ice can actually stop the fan from rotating, but you would hear loud bangind and rattling for hours first as the fan blades come in contact with the ice.

If you do not have drifts, but continually have an excessive amount of ice build up, either the sensor is possibly faulty or the defrost control board is faulty. The sensor's clip could easily have been knocked loose from the coil by ice and is no longer sensing coil temperature and if so the result would be the lack of defrost initiation.

I have seen compressors get loud when running and not pump the refrigerant causing it not to cool. Typically I have seen this on either a Kenmore made by whirlpool or a whirlpool brand side by side made from 2000 through 2006.

You failed to give a model# with your question so I can only say maybe that is it?

Changing a compressor is not for the average joe.. It takes a lot of tools and training to perform this not only correctly ,but safely as well! Not to mention legally as there is Freon inside the unit that must be recovered not vented into the atmosphere..

Hello
Sounds like the condensor fan motor is going bad.If the fan stops turning or is not turning at full speed, the compressor can not give off heat to the condensor.Which will cause it to shut down on high heat.

So i would start with a new fan motor.Your local heating and cooling supply house should have these in stock.

Vibration when heat only is on inside and out

Is it noisy always when running in heat or only for intermittant periods? Depending on where you live every 45-90 minutes of run time the heat pump goes into a cycle called defrost. The fan on the outdoor unit will shut off. the compressor will continue to run but in actually cool mode. this heats the outdoor coil and allows any frost or ice that is built up on the outdoor coil to melt. The compressor can get pretty loud in this mode and you may actually see steam coming off of the unit. This is normal. However if it is noisy all of time in heat check/clean your coils. If this doesn't remedy it have your refrigerant charge checked by a NATE certified Service Technician. Good luck.
