Iriver h340 new hard drive will not boot

After my previous hdd failed, i put a toshiba mk8007gah hdd into the player, which i believe is compatible. i've been able to format it on my laptop via usb, transferred files to it, have scanned it, seems to be fully functioning. BUT it will not boot up in my player at all, either using iriver firmware v1.29 (constantly says CHECK HDD CONNECTION), or rockbox software (variety of ATA errors). what am i doing wrong, or have not done. apologies, i'm not v.technical.

SOURCE: Iriver says ''Check HDD Connection'' at initial boot up--

if you know some one with the same iriver...you can copy thier software (not music) onto you pc / laptop....disconnect & plug your iriver up...now you can format your iriver..copy the software onto it...its like starting fresh now.......but if no one is around w/ an iriver..you will have just purchase another one ...(if purchase hard drive you will still need the software)...

Window XP does not recognize my H340 after battery change.

H340 should show as a removable disk drive. Ensure it is formatted as Fat32, run chkdsk, or scandisk. Does the H340 boot into play mode? you did not say. I replaced my battery with no problems... so if it boots Ok it is a non-related fault.

Iriver H320

Apparently most of the Mp3 players use a common garden variety Lap Top Hard Drive like a Toshiba etc. I have a Friend who replaced his in a Creative Zen. So Either take it a a reputable Laptop repair firm or simply pull the back off and check it out yourself. I haven't down this yet because I am still trying to Back up the contents of my H320 before it fails completely. When you pull the back off it should have a small hard drive just clipped into it using a wiring connection similar to a Laptop. Find the numbering and get a compatible replacement. The you may need to download a Firmware update as an exe file from IRiver and put this in the bas directory of the H320 and run it. THis sets up the necessary software. You may even be able to put in a larger hard drive 40 or 60 gb as they are all the same price depending on your budget. Let me know how it goes as I will be doing the same job shortly.

Motherboard hard drive connection

You cannot get replacement parts except from a cheap broken H340 on eBay - the motherboard may be damaged on the one you order. Not available form manufacturer. Most of the time, I would say that these are not economical to repair, but 40GB players are hard to find - call best Buy's Geek Squad and see if they will do it. Otherwise, you will have to go with a local Mp3 repair service (Philadelphia is one of the few cities that actually has one of these).

HDD not recognised

I am not an expert, but the same thing happened with me and that's because the bit connecting the motherboard to the hardrive has been damaged, so may be the same for you....

Iriver h340

Have you tried a program such as drive rescue (I got a portable version (for PC)from portablefreeware.com)
Likewise roadkill's unstoppable copier(google it, sorry no link) I don't know of Mac equivalents.

From memory the hard drive is a 1.8" Toshiba drive. If this is the case, you can get a USB enclosure to plug it into. (I got one on eBay for a similar situation with a faulty X-drive) You will need to pull the h340 apart before you buy it because there are a couple of pin configurations for 1.8 in drives. If you have to resort to cracking it open there was a video on youtube (I think) showing you how.

MisticRiver For iriver Enthusiasts would have more detail, I am going from memory and has been a long time.
