Re: printer says out of paper when it isn't.
There should be a paper sensor somewhere either to sense paper in the holder, or to sense as a sheet is pulled into the printer. It is likely there is a plastic finger which contacts the paper, and the other end of this finger either actuates a switch or an optical sensor. Sometimes this finger can get broken, and thus the printer gives a false paper-out error.
This sensor & finger may not be visible without removing covers, partial disassembly.

The error code 50 indicates a paper jam condition. Whether there's actually still paper jammed or not, it's sensors are still indicating a jam. Check again for a bit of paper, or there may be a faulty sensor. Check out this link: Brother for further information.
Double check all doors/ rollers for small pieces of paper stuck in the rollers. Sometimes just opening the door in question and closing will reset the paper jam sensors. Paper jams can be smaller than your pinky finger nail. So double check,
Here is your solution.
1.Press reset/stop button for 5 seconds without releasing button.
2.After 5 seconds your printer will start one process..release the button.
3.Now your printer is ready to use..... thanks
General tip: If the paper tears when you pull a jam out of the printer, spread the paper out and make sure you have all of the pieces. A small shred left inside can cause another jam.
"I also can the drum" - does this mean you discarded the printer cartridge? I've never seen a cartridge cause a jam. Usually an accordion-fold jam in this area is the result of the fuser rollers not turning or a torn fuser sleeve. A jam without an accordion fold indicates that the paper did not make it into the toner deposition area soon enough - this could be a problem with the pickup roller or the next set of rollers. Worn or dirty rollers can work intermittently before they quit completely.
Also, check the paper detection flag to make sure it isn't hanging up (this is a black plastic tab that sticks into the paper path just before the
paper goes under the cartridge, and is pushed up or down by the paper). Look for the U-shaped optical detector that is interrupted by this flag, and make sure it isn't blocked by foreign material.
there are many spring loaded switches within a printer that monitor the location of a sheet of paper, it is possible that one of these switches got stuck and is the cause of your problem. Printers can be quite difficult to work on, so I would recommend taking it to a local repair shop to have it looked at. If the switch is simply stuck it may be a quick and easy repair.
Another thing to look at is to make sure all of the rollers that feed the paper through your printer are moving, if one is stuck it could be giving you the same error.
There is likely a loose connection going to the manual feed paper sensor. The printer thinks there's paper in the manual feed, but of course since there isn't any paper there, when it tries to feed the paper in from the manual feed, the next paper sensor is not tripped, so it assumes there is a jam in the manual feed. Start testing at the manual feed sensor, and work your way back to the board it connects to. It may be the sensor itself just needs to be cleaned - these sensors are usually optical, and spraying canned air at it will often fix it up. Also, make sure the lever that trips the sensor isn't sticking after using the manual feed.
