Must be an HDMI ?

If yes use the HDMI DVD input on your receiver ( from the Blue Ray using a HDMI cable )
Then use an HDMI cable from receiver to TV.

That should work for image. Sound would only work directly from TV, to have sound on receiver:

Use either optical or coax cable to direct digital sound from blueray to receiver.
Best is optic, depends on blueray or cable availability ... Coax = RCA cables @ 75 Ohms, use of a spare RGB would work find (using only one of three color available let's say using Red only) or try with any RCA cable.

direct cable from blueray to receiver ( Digital inputs at far left looking back of receiver num 7 in owner manual, choose DVD )

If no sound from receiver check Audio select from option menu ( set to auto )

Any specific question about this procedure ?

or guess you already found out,

Enjoy :-)

Cannot get surround sound to work with Philips hts3106/f7 andonic tcp50g25. It works fine for Blue ray via the hdmi out of philips dvd/receiver, but not for xbox or cable etc (only works in stereo).

i have the same system. all you have to do is when you connect your xbox 360, press the surround button on the remote and then use the arrow buttons to change it to dolby music pro2 or multi channel audio. same goes with any device you connect. hope it helps. In my case the xbox is connected to the Tv via HDMI and bluray player is connected to xbox via compoent cable

I have this receiver hooked up to a Vizio LED tv and a Vizio Blue Ray using HDMI cables. The surround sound works from the speakers while watching a dvd (HDMI -1 connection) but I have no surround sound...

AV cables don't pass surround sound through, they are pretty much just left and right stereo. You need to turn pro logic on on the reciever to "pretend" to play surround. The better option of course would be to use a digital signal like another HDMI cable or digital optical audio from the cable box, if thats what your using.

Hi I have a Yamaha yht 292 surround sound system with a model htr 6230 reciever. I have a panasonic (42'') plasma HDTV (model TC P42X1) attached to the receiver by a HDMI cable. I also have a Samsung Blue...

As per HTR-6230 specifications (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=5028494&CTID=5000400&ATRID=1020&DETYP=ATTRIBUTE) the HDMI function is only "audio-passthru", which means your receiver is not able to get the audio from HDMI cable, it can only pass it forward to TV. You would need a receiver with "HDMI switch" to be able to listen to audio via HDMI cable. You can find such receiver by looking if it supports TrueHD audio (which can be transferred ONLY via HDMI cable).

With your current receiver, you can connect it to the Blue-ray player via Optical SPDIF cable. I have checked the specs and both receiver and BD player supports optical connection.

I cannot get sound from a sony BDS350 (Blue ray

This must be configuration problem on the BD player. In this case receiver just outputs the signal it receives digitally. If it displayes PCM 2ch, that means it receives only 2 channel audio from BD player.
You can try to configure the BD player not to decode audio and to output the RAW stream over coax cable to the receiver. Then the receiver should get raw Dolby Digital encoded data and be able to decode it into 5.1 channels. It should also display Dolby D instead of PCM in such case.

I just bought a Blue Ray player but my surround sound has a dvd player built in and only one input which I have my new Sharp TV plugged into. How can I hook up my Blue Ray . I have the HDMI cables

Depending on if your surround system has a hdmi input or not. if it does you can connect the blu-ray player to it. If it doesn't have an hdmi input you will have to run the hdmi cable from the blu-ray to the tv then run a set of rca cables (red and white plugs) from the tv audio out to the surround systems' audio input jacks to get sound through the surround system. Most surround systems don't have an auxiliary input for another video device.

Humming sound when watching tv,but not when watching dvd's

It wounds like you are getting interference from you tv to the receiver. You can try a few different things here.

1. Connect the tv output into another input on you receiver to see if it isnt the channel on the receiver.

2. Try a different set of cables between the tv and receiver. Faulty cables can give you problems.

3. Connect the cable from you tv to a different device. (another dvd vcr blue ray etc.) This will tell you if its the receivers or the tv.

Cannot hear anything but speakers are fine. hooked up to directv box, LED tv and blue ray player.

It may be that your hdmi wires are damaged or plugs are loose. Try to tune it.

The Yamaha RX-V463 AV does not playsound from the blue ray player

"I am also having difficulties in try to display the yamaha set up menu on the tv."
According to the manual the display menu for TV will not work with HDMI hook up.
I also have a Panasonic HD TV and can't get TV sound through my Yamaha AVR on "TV Sound" mode.  Trying to use HDMI cable for this also.  Do I need a digital optical cable or do I not have something set right?

I have a Yamaha Rx-v363 receiver using HDMI jacks but I am not getting any sound through my surround sound only my tv speakers. I have a digital audio optical cable running from the receiver to the blue...

this sounds strange, but is true. you need to run your digital audio optical cable from your tv to your receiver (after, of course, connecting tv/receiver via hdmi). so, hdmi from blue ray to rec - hdmi from rec to tv - then optical from tv back to rec. it's round about, but that is how yamaha says (and the only way it works) to do it.
