Thank you for your time and effort to help me with my Frigidaire GLRS264ZAQ1 refrigerator. Serial number LA12901263 Build date 7/2001 The refrigerator was running great, then all of a sudden it started blowing the GFI circuit in the receptacle. I tried a different circuit, but with the same results. (instant GFI shutdown) I attached the unit to a normal circuit without a GFI and it seems to run OK. (it will cool, the compressor runs, and the condenser fan runs) My wife said something was clicking (like a relay?) intermittently before this happened. I started to unplug things to see if I could get the problem to go away. 1. Ice maker. No change 2. Remove panel in freezer. Unplug defroster heater element. GFI no longer tripped. Here is where I am confused. Since the unit was running I could see and feel the evaporator getting cold, but the evaporator fan never started. (the door switch was held closed) with the fan unplugged I put 110 to it and it run fine. 3. I unplugged the evaporator fan and plugged back in the heater element. Again, no GFI tripping. I can unplug either the defrost element or the fan and the GFI will not trip. If they are both attached to the circuit the GFI trips immediately. My wife remembered several years ago that under warranty a defrost board part number 240554502 (on repair slip) was replaced. She said the clicking was occurring then also and the board fixed the problem. I could not find a clear enough wiring schematic online to see if this board also controlled the fan. I am more than willing to do whatever else you require to help diagnose the problem.
The fan and defrost heater are run off the same relay on the board. When on defrost, the fan stops. when the fan starts, the defrost heater is switched off, Sounds like the neutral to the board may be shorting. If you have the ability, try powering the evaporator fan from the compressor relay, disconnecting from the board entirely. To see if this will work, just take a temporary wire to the fan when disconnected and see if it trips while running.
SOURCE: Refrigerator trips GFI outlet
unlikely to be the defrost timer. more likely to be the defrost element. try disconnecting the element and see if it trips then. could be of course a wiring fault - frayed wires etc
SOURCE: frigerator runs constanly till compresser gets to hot
Sounds like it might be the thermostat
sensor bulb is defective see if you can
turn the refrigerator off with the thermostat
the defrost heater is supposed to heat up
enough to open the defrost thermostat
Make sure the defrost timer works to
turn on lhe heater & turn off the defrost tstat
turn the power off and check the tstat & defrost
heater for continuity check to see if tstat open
and closes when you turn the knob,
if you remove the tstat you can check the
bulb in ice water and warm water aborv 40
to see if tstat cycles on and off

Hi Chris,
The problem would seem to be that you developed a small leak in the refrigeration system. This is also assuming that you checked and cleaned the condenser coils which are underneath the fridge. Excessive dirt could also cause this, but from what you are describing I would say the problem is more then that and you have a leak...
The only other thing would be thermostat sensor issues, but then the compressor would be cycling and not running steady...

Your defrost stat or the heater is bad. This is what keeps the temp from cold as it should.
