Hi. I hope you've got the solution to this. All of a sudden, whenever I try to playback recorded images (video & still) I'm barely seeing anything--except tiny coloured squares that look like pieces of a puzzle. Very choppy. Choppy, staticky sound also. I have also noticed that, lately, a red "x" in a circle shows up on the screen and flickers when I am recording. Help! I use my camcorder all the time! Thank YOu!!!

I had the same problem with the VL-NZ50. It wasn't the camera, it was the IEEE 1394 interface on the laptop(s) - I tried two different ones, one XP, the other W7 64; both were HPs with on-board (OHCI compliant) TI IEEE-1394 chipsets.
Then I tried a Gateway desktop (Vista) with an on-board Ricoh IEEE 1394 interface: the VL-NZ50 was recongnized instantly, controlled by the PC and transferring video flawlessly.
If you want it to work with your laptop , try an Adaptec PCMCIA card (I've heard they work with this camera), they can be had for under $10.
This problem can certainly be fixed and is not that expensive : the no image in capture mode when you can playback is caused by faulty CCD sensor and you might even have it done free of charge because it is often a faulty sensor that goes in your camera during manufacture. Sony in particular repairs these faults free of charge, but others do too.
