Question about Fisher and Paykel Refrigerators

Intermittent Cooling Elba RF240BR - My fridge & freezer are intermittently cooling. Tick sound, then 10 sec later a whir then a clunk. Whir lasts for 10 sec, then stops with another tick. Off for 1 min then cycles again. Can you please suggest which part may be faulty for replacement? Freezer fan & fridge light are fine.

I've picked up from other posts that the rounded black box attached to the compressor is a "Relay" and/or a "Capacitor" and/or an "Overload Contactor also called the RTX". Are these the same thing, or are there 3 items within the black box? Nothing else is accessable without breaking a factory seal.

And these two links from other posts appear to be the most helpful. This evening I will pull the box off the compressor and have a look.

Working! Thanks to the FixYa site. I replaced the Overload Relay (in the box attached to the compressor) and the Capacitor (hiding around the corner). Initial power-up, the symptoms were the same. I switched off for 5 min, the back on - The compressor made an ugly noise, then settled down after a minute. It's been running fine for 3 days now. Case Closed :-)

Yes your compressor is coming to a stop. There was a 5yr warranty I am sure but if it's 6.5yrs now it's still beyond coverage. I would call some authorized companies familiar with these models who replace the compressors. Not all companies do. Shop around for the best price. I am sure you can do better than $700. I can usually compete that job in 1.5hrs. And the replacement is a great compressor.

you have a defrost problem, could be bad adaptive defrost board,t-stat heater, when you open freezer door listen for fan if fan is blowing check the t-stat,look at it and see if it has a buldge on it,sometime you can see this and tell it's bad, you'll need a meter to read out the heater and other parts to see whats bad, might be a good idea to call a tech to do this, when you find problem you have to melt everything out again

These fridges go through all sorts of cycles, the defrost cycle is probably the noisiest, strange sounds are ok, it will tell you when something serious is wrong, alerts & alarms.

Kenmore refr/bottom freezer has quit freezing 3 times in last 3 weeks.

If the fridge is 10yrs old or more the newer models will pay for themselves with efficiency fairly quickly. now on to the "barking" that may be the fan motor(that blows air over the condenser fins) or the compressor the later i point you to my first statement. the fan motor can be lubed with a graphite type powder on the bushings, or replaced from one of the many parts places online eg: sears parts direct, repair clinic etc. RC has videos to help with some repairs too.

Maytag fridge stops cooling, then 1-2 days later restarts on own

The buzzing is typically gonna be the compressor trying to start and failing. Am I right in saying the fridge is at least 12 or more years old?

Maytag used to use a compressor made by Tecumseh and they had a problem with starting. They would buzz and sometimes start back up. Sometimes in a few tries or a few days or never. It would continue to re try every couple minutes and last 5-10 seconds.

I would verify if it is a Tecumseh or an Embraco compressor then make your decision.

A service tech should be able to figure this out pretty easily! Normally what I would do is if I go in and it is running then I would turn it off and back on right away. the fridge will go through its restart sequence and typically make its noises then. Hopefully you are not being charged every time they come out

Compressors are the most expensive repair! and on these I always replace the discharge tube since they tend to rot out from sitting in the drain pan.

Let us know what you find!

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

Temperature Display, Clicking Intermittent, Lost all Cooling

unplug the fridge and turn it around so you can see the compressor, does it have a capacitor located on the compressor (a round cylinder with wires comming out of it going to the compressor) it sounds like that could be your problem. They are pretty easy to change just a couple of wiers, just take note of where they go when you take it out. Make sure its unplugged from the wall before you do anything!
