This seems to be a problem with some older panels. If you are prepared to tackle the problem yourself then try the following.
WARNING there are some very high voltages within the TV which can be LETHAL so the greatest of care should be taken.
With the back of the TV removed, use a hair dryer and apply warm air to all the ribbon cables in turn until you find the one which causes the fault to disappear. Now turn your attention to the faulty ribbon and remake the connections as necessary.
Hi tlaufer , According to the symptom this problem is related to the VIDEO HEAD, As you earlier try to clean the head but no results, Please open the cassette compartment of your camera (as when you insert the cassette in it) for 30 mins (remains open cassette compartment) Actueally some time due to moisture head get durt. After 30 mins insert the cassette and play it. Hope it will start work again fine. But if no result from the said procedure then there must be a damadge of point of the head, in this condition you have to replace the VIDEO HEAD assembly. Thanks for using fixya.
i had this same problem, there is a common fault with these models, and the onyl way to fix it is to get a chip replaced in there...cant remmerb the name of this, but it cost me about £30, now the tvs fine
