The ice maker in my Whirlpool refrigerator is not making ice. The arm lifts like it is dumping ice into the bin, but there is no ice to dump. I believe the problem is in the water supply, but not sure. I have through the door ice dispensing with a water dispenser and I can get water through the door dispenser. I took the cover off of the ice maker and the gear goes around as it goes through the cycle of dumping ice. The arm lifts during the dumping process and drops after the ice supposedly has dumped. I don't see any water coming through the tube at the top of the ice maker.
The door dispenser does have the water dispenser working. The ice maker ejector arm actually goes around every few minutes. I don't hear the usual clicking to let more water in, and no water is going into the tray. How to I test the water valve to verify it is functioning? And/or if there is water getting to the valve, but I know water is getting to the fridge door dispenser. The door dispenser does have the water dispenser working. Re:
Tammi, you first want to check to make sure the water inlet tube to the icemaker is not frozen shut. Next, get yourself a jumper wire about 4 inches long with the ends stripped exposing the wire on each end. Pull off the ice maker cover, it will pull right off. Now you are looking at the module. On the module, left side, you will see two test points marked V and L. Insert one end of the jumper wire into V and the other marked L. You are now sending 120 volts to the water valve and water should fill the ice maker providing the inlet tube is not frozen over. If it doesn't fill, you either have a bad water valve or module itself. Also check to see if the clips that hold the center gear on the module are not broken. Catriver..post back.

That sounds to me like it is working exactly as it is supposed to. Once the tray is full, the arm lifts and it stops making ice. Once you use some of the ice, it will drop the arm and turn the ice maker back on.
The wire arm that travels up ad down when it dumps ice. Lift the arm to the horizontal position and it should stay there. The ice maker is now off. Push the arm back down and the ice maker is on.
most likely you need a new ice maker, one thing that could do this is the white arms that spin around when dumping the ice, sometimes one of the arms bend and jam the ice maker and you'll hear that knocking soundthe arm gets bent, the ice cube gets stuck because the arm can't push it out,,it stops the motor from spinning through it's full cycle and damages it but this is just a guess from something i've seen happen but most likely you need a new ice maker, one other i've seen is the metal arm that you can lift up to shut off the ice maker gets knocked out of the hole it slides into.if you pop off the white cover and get a jumper wire and stick it into the h and t holes you can jump start the ice maker.http://appliantology.org/gallery/image/659-manual-harvest-on-a-whirlpool-modular-ice-maker/
Make sure the arm is down on the ice maker. There is a heating element that warms the ice tray slightly so it can break the ice loose and dump. If the element is bad it would be best to buy a new ice maker. They run from 68 dollars and up. good luck

Is the freezer cold enough? Should be close to 10 degrees.
Is there water or ice in the ice mold? If not put water in
it and see if it dumps the ice after it’s frozen. If there is ice, lift the cut off arm and let
it drop to see if it will start.
If it does dump the ice but don’t refill with water.
Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then
try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell
you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.
The water inlet valve on the back of unit opens when the ice
maker needs water. If the valve doesn't seal good because of sediment or wear
it will continue to drip and when the water reaches the ice maker supply tube
it will freeze. You can take the water
line off the valve and watch to see if it drips.

On the ice makers on refridgerators unless the ice in the bucket is high enough to raise the arm on the icemaker it will not shut off. Most people lift the arm up when they see the bucket full. I have the side by side Whirlpool model and on mine if I don't raise the arm the ice will fall out the bucket before it will raise the arm high enough.
