There should be a label on the indoor or outdoor unit telling you the charge amount. You also have to consider the length of the pipe run which may need extra R22 added per meter after about 7m. But since R22 is being phased out world wide, it is usually extremely expensive and you're probably better off cutting your losses and installing a new one.
I have been a mechanic since 1947 and never known timing to affect the exhaust sound of an engine that would start and run with no other indications. perhaps someone stole the catalytic converter and put a straight pipe in its place.
Outside in the condensing unit you'll see the two copper pipes coming from the valves in the condensing unit. atach the hose from the high pressure gauge to the port in the smaller copper pipe (liquid line) and the other hose to the port of the other line (suction line) in there you check the low pressure (68psi) and if is low you can rechrge it, in the high side you should have no much more than 250psi .This pressures are for R22.
use a little steel wire in the hole in the pipe to remove old milk residue you dont have to go to deep in the pipe 1 or 2 inch inside you have to remove the black plastic piece that goes in the milk thanks pierre
