I have the same problem that the Grtpumpkin solved.

you have a bad flexible cable. it needs to be replaced. unless you are good at soldering i would not recommend you replace it yourself, as the connector needs to be unsoldered from the old cable and resoldered on the new one.

Cable

The difficult part is I have a KDC-X815 and you have a KDC-7024, so I have no idea how different they are internally/mechanically. But if it's any help, here are the (excellent) instructions I used to repair mine. I was able to find a replacement cable at a local stereo shop that also does stereo repair.

This forum thread has a lot of good info, too:

Display totally gone.

I'm not sure if your unit is a flip face, but if it is then the first thing I would suspect would be the ribbon cable that connects the flip face to the main circuit board. Hope this helps.

Kenwood KDC-715s problem.

the kenwoods with the motorized face platesdevelop one problem with time. the flexable ribbon cable between the main unit & the face plate. as the face open & closes, over time wares out the cable. problem consists of face plate not opening/closing, display missing & and/or some or all buttons not working. note these can also be intermittent problems. typically the part number is located on the cable itself on the side where it pluggs into the main board. since you have a service manual, you should verify it in the manual. good luck.
