Marantz PMD 660 won't power up from batteries

Hey. I just bought a second hand PMD660 and it works great. From mains power! but I've tried Alc and NiMH batteries and there is just no sign of life. The display (when turned on via mains) shows "ALC" - as if it's a default setting, and even though I've changed it in all three presets - still no luck. I've been using brand new (and tested) batteries. I've also ensured that the contacts are not bent or dirty and that the batteries are seated propely. Of course. Is there some other setting that I should be aware of or some known problem with this unit?

Similar problem - won't power up from any kind of rechargeable. Will power up from alkalines. Can't seem to change the battery setting from alkaline to rechargeable.

I would suspect the battery tray connections are defective most likely due to a broken wire.

SOURCE: My Marantz PMD 661 digtial audio recorder is

ALC Automatic Level Control

In other words, an audio compressor which reduces the level when the level gets too much.

Look up "audio compression" with Google for a complete treatise how it works.

This implies that there is not enough current going to the device when running on battery (only back-light but no data) whereas running fine on AC means that the device board is most likely in a good operational condition.
I think maybe once a leaked worn battery which left forgotten inside battery compartment damaged the battery terminals or at least the wires connecting these terminals to the main board, i would recommend you to open and check on that.

I have a Marantz 660 - when I tried to download a recording the icon didn't come up on the computer- it did the first time and I was able to download but it didn't work the second time.

Hi. I use mine with a Mac. The instructions say it's the same for PC. From the 'off' position, plug in the usb cable to the computer, hold down the 'copy/ usb' button and switch it on. The display will read 'usb' and the icon -"should" appear on the desktop. Open the folder and look for files with machine ID. Failing that, try new usb cable? or the techies favourite: "switch everything off and start again" LOL
