Hey. I just bought a second hand PMD660 and it works great. From mains power! but I've tried Alc and NiMH batteries and there is just no sign of life. The display (when turned on via mains) shows "ALC" - as if it's a default setting, and even though I've changed it in all three presets - still no luck. I've been using brand new (and tested) batteries. I've also ensured that the contacts are not bent or dirty and that the batteries are seated propely. Of course. Is there some other setting that I should be aware of or some known problem with this unit?
SOURCE: where can I get manual for Marantz PMD-221
I have manuals for the Marantz PMD 201/PMD221 and the 420/430.

SOURCE: My Marantz PMD 661 digtial audio recorder is
ALC Automatic Level Control
In other words, an audio compressor which reduces the level when the level gets too much.
Look up "audio compression" with Google for a complete treatise how it works.

Similar problem - won't power up from any kind of rechargeable. Will power up from alkalines. Can't seem to change the battery setting from alkaline to rechargeable.
