When I connect the hard drive to my computer everything seems to work ok, but when I try to open or transfer my files it says that they are either damaged or not available. Also a message saying CRC-problem pops up. It does not work trying to search the unit for any problems, nor does it work to defrag it. What is the problem and how do I solve it without any major costs?
This error message could be generated by any of the below reasons. Network / Modem transmission issues If you are attempting to open the file from a network / modem it is likely the network either is encountering collisions or other errors during the data transmission. Note: if the file is being sent through a session such as FTP or Telnet it is possible that it may not be sent properly. If the file is a text file, the file must be sent as either ASCII or TEXT mode. If, however, the file is a program or non-text file, it must be sent as a Binary file. Removable media issues If the file is attempting to be opened from a removable media such as a Zip disk / Floppy diskette it is possible data corruption is being encountered on the diskette itself or when coming from the removable media. CD issues If the file is being opened from a CD-ROM it is possible the CD is dirty or scratched causing read errors. If the CD was burned it is possible that it was burned improperly. File is bad or program attempting to open the file is bad Finally, if the file is being opened from the hard disk drive or other media, it is likely that the file is corrupted or the program opening the file is corrupted.
Solution
Assume the file is bad and cannot be recovered
hope this helps
SOURCE: Will not back up - says 'Invalid drive specification'
Did you add another drive to that computer? it sounds like the hard drive has taken on a different drive letter and you have a program that has the drive letter specified. check to make sure the drives letter didnt change.
SOURCE: IOMEGA eGo portable hard drive won't copy files from mac
Format your hardrive for Mac OS:
Go to Disk Utilities under the go menu in your finder. Select the external drive and click on the erase tab. Clikc erase again and it formats the drive. You can now copy files onto the drive.

Hi Trajan & Cossrock,
Both may be as simple as stopping in at the local computer store and buying a new enclosure to move the drive into, however in Trajans case if the drives were working as a stripe set yours will likely need more in depth help.
So Cossrock, pop into your local computer store and have them test the AC adapter, it may simply need replacing, if not then try moving the drive to a new enclosure. If that doesn't work then you will need the help of a Data Recovery Expert and I can point you in the right direction, just comment back here and let me know how you made out.
Trajan, if your NAS box was simply running two drives seperately you should be able to move them into seperate cases or another dual drive case similar to Cossrocks solution, however if they are RAIDed you will likely need more assistance, please check and comment back if they are in RAID format. Also even if they are not in RAID many NAS boxes use a Linux OS and therefor a Linux format on the drive, if this is the case comment back and I will get you a link to a Linux file format driver but please include your OS Wndows Vista/XP/2000, Mac, Linux etc.
Well folks hope this helps you both out and like I said comment back with an update if you run into trouble and I will keep helping on the next steps.

It sounds like the hard drive head crashed when you pulled the power plug. Unfortunately if you can't get drive to be recognized, you won't even be able to run any diagnostics. You will have to take the drive to an authorized repair shop who will have to check the electronics to see if the head will respond. Unless you have data on your drive that you absolutely need, you will probably save a lot of money by replacing rather than repairing the drive.
Plug the external hard drive into your laptop or desktop computer.
Most external hard drives do this through a cable connecting the hard drive to the USB outlet on a computer.
Plug your external hard drive into a wall outlet if it receives power from an AC adapter rather than your computer.
Click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and open the external hard drive.
It will be located under the USB connecting drive, which is labeled with a letter ranging from "E:" to "K:".
Open the folder on your external hard drive where you would like to save the photographs.
usually in my documents my pictures or if you want to save them to a specific spot so as not get them mixed up.
Create a folder if one is not present right click in my documents select new folder and name it lets say my pics 1
Move this window to the bottom right corner of your screen to be used in future steps.
Open the folder on your home computer where the files are being stored that you wish to transfer to the external hard drive.
These may be on the desktop, in "My Documents" or elsewhere in your computer.
If you are unsure where they are located, you can always search for them by file name by going to "Start" then "Search."
Right-click on the photo file, and select "Cut."
Click on the window showing your hard drive files to bring it into use on the screen.
Right-click on the white space in the window where you would like to transfer the files, and select "Paste."
Your files have now been deleted from their original location and transferred to your external hard drive in the folder you selected
hope this helps
