I have the similar probelm with the Model 721.80522. When I try to heat anything, the microwave activates, lights on and turntable moves. Then I hear a loud buzzing sound, like something inside is electrically arcing. I haven't tried running it empty, however.

very loud buzzing noise when turned on

    model: 61601 (hood combination)

    thanks for your help

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2008

I have the Kenmore model # 721.80523500 hood combination and it too started making a loud buzzing sound when turned on.  For a couple of days, it made the sound intermittently, but now, the buzzing sound is constant.  It doesn't heat any thing I put in there. The only time it sounds normal without the buzzing sound, is when I try to heat on Power=0.  But you can't heat anything with 0 power, and it makes the buzzing noise with Power = 10 thru 100.  Is this something I can repair myself?  Please help!

Have you tried putting a cup of water in it and cooking on a low power level? If it buzzes only when it is on the cook cycle, that would narrow it down. More detals might help us help you, including the model number.

I have the same issue, when I put a cup of water in it and cooking on a low power level the buzzing stops and sounds normal. Any setting Power Setting higher then 1 will cause the buzzing to start again.

I have the same isssue and tried the low power step. The buzzing goes away when on Power Level 1. Any power level above 1 the loud buzzing returns.

Kenmore Over the Range Microwave making buzzing sound and not heating

This is a strong indicator the magnetron is fried, also! this is the most expensive part to replace in the microwave oven, and in most cases cheaper to replace the whole unit.

My microwave no longer heats anything and also makes a really loud buzzing sound when i attempt to use it.

The problem is most likely caused by a defective magnetron that "heats the food" is loading down the high voltage transformer causing it to make a loud buzzing sound. The cost to repair (depending on make and model) will probably approach the cost of a new microwave oven when you factor parts and labor.

Microwave making loud noise behind control pad and won't heat

Sounds like the magnatron (the bit that creates microwaves) could be goosed. Remove outer cover ( Isolate from the electric supply then remove screws at bottom on the sides).

Find big lump that says on magnatron with model nos etc on, any good electrical supply shop ( Maplins etc) should stock new one.

It is easy to change. It took me about half an hour having never done one before.

Buyer beware the price of the parts could be in excess of a new microwave.

Makes a loud buzzing noise and does not get hot

Have seen this many times.

Sounds like a bad CAP since a bad diode would blow the fuse and a bad mag would likely do the same thing.

Since yours is making the loud 60hz buzz you need to replace the capacator that will likely fix the problem. A $10 fix

Ge microwave - making noise

Mwave made loud buzzing noise then didn't heat up anymore

When there's a loud buzz like that, it does not heat, and does not blow the fuse, it is usually a defective magnetron. Did it sound something like someone making a "gurgling" sound into a coffee cup? I think this has a a one-year warranty, with n five-year warranty covering the magnetron.
