I just baught this new in the box, it's less than a week old. It was working fine a few hours ago, but now when I press play, it makes a grinding type noise, then reads "no disc." I have tried using different discs, new batteries, taking out battteries for a few minutes to let it reset (not even sure if that is necessary)and still no change. I then took out the screws and opened the case up, nothing seems to be loose or out of place. Any ideas?

It's a well known fact PS2's had a cheap lazer fitted to them, that's why when it gets chiped to play copy games, not long after it starts playing up. The lazer may just need aligning, purchase a cd/dvd cleaning cd rom as these can check audio, lazer alignment and clean the lens.

Well, you have one of two things going on. Either A.) your laser lens is dirty or B.) Your laser lens is out of alignment.
Using lens cleaner kits are useless for any cdrom or dvdrom if you're a smoker and smoke around your PS2. Reason I say this is nicotine and other resin forms cloud your lens over time and create a film on it.
By what it sounds like to me is since it's reading disks part of the time and kinda works, that your laser lens alignment might be ok. However, don't rule this out completely.
First, do a cleaning. Power on your PS2 and open dvdrom tray via the button on your console and power down the PS2 via the switch on the back. The point of this is to keep the dvdrom tray open as you take apart your PS2 so we can get at the lens. Take the PS2 apart (flip it upside down and remove the 8 screws from the bottom, 4 maybe covered up by rubber and plastic square plates so remove those to get at the screws) Next, take the top of the PS2 off and look at the DVD assembly, there should be four screws that keep the lid on the dvdrom. Remove these four screws and take the plastic plate off the top of the dvdrom. Watch this video and clean the following items:
Put your PS2 back together and test. If this doesn't work let me know and i'll go over instructions on how to align your laser lens. But i'm quite sure, by what you have told me, that this is your problem.

Hey, I have the same problem with my sony walkman cd player. (D-EJ001) ...I push play and it says no disc, then just shuts off. Grinding noise here too, like the cd is going to try to spin but never does. I paid extra for this thing because it's supposed to be durable, but never even dropped it.
