Computer will not boot with Lacie Desktop Hard Disk connected.
Hi there, I write because I just bought a Lacie Desktop Hard Disk 1 TB USB.
I have tried to look into FAQ in LaCie's website and also googled, but I can't find my exact problem:
The hard disk works all well when the PCs are already turned on, but with two of my PCs, it is not possible to reboot either of the PCs with the LaCie desktop hard disk connected. (But on the other hand, I tested the LaCie hard disk my notebook and it works like a charm to reboot it with the Lacie hard disk connected, but since it's with my two other PCs that I am to use the external LaCie hard disk, and not on my notebook, it's no solution to me.)
What happens is simply that when I reboot, the picture remains on the first screen where one is asked whether to press del to enter setup or tab for BIOS. But if I try either of the options, nothing happens. I wanted to be able to enter the bios to see whether I could change the priorities, but since it wouldn't enter the bios with the Lacie connected, it seems to me an impossible task. Well, the "first" image just remains when trying to boot the PCs. But if I disconnect the LaCie and then try to reboot, both PCs boot perfectly well again. Both PCs are quite new and have what I think is called onboard motherboard (where the USB ports, audio inputs etc etc. are all on the motherboard and not on their own PCI slots like on older PCs). I have several older LaCie hard disks, and I haven't encountered any problems with these earlier models.
So I am curious about what the solution will be.
It is surely a big inconvenience if I will have to disconnect the USB cable from the Lacie hard disk for each time I am to restart the PCs, and wait till the PC is rebooted to connect the USB cable back to the LaCie hard disk again.

Same issues with boot up. I installed it on XP and it crashed the computer. Computer recognizes drive in My Computer but won't get past bios screen when booting up and HD is attached via USB. I have the same problem. Just got a lacie hard drive and can't boot my desktop pc when the drive is turned on. The system just hangs trying to boot up. If I turn the drive off, with the switch on the back of the drive, then it will boot up. After I boot up I can flick the switch to the on position and the hard drive works fine.

Same problem but with a 500GB HD. In my case it is a Dell Inspiron 530. I have tried all USB connectors on the back, front and the built in hub on the display.Same problem but with a 500GB HD. Changing the boot order doesn't work. I've even disabled the third boot device option to eliminate the USB LaCie disk and the PC steadfastly refuses to boot with it turned on. This is a right PITA. It has to have something to do with the disc. I'm going to try re-formatting it to see if that works..

You can enter the bios on bootup by pressing a special key to force your computer to go into BIOS mode. What key this is varies by computer, often it is F8, F10, sometines F11. Anyway, use the key for your computer, and change to boot modus to not first boot from USB.

this unit is compatible with a few of LaCie power supplies, but it is generally sold with the one providing hte following:

An external storage-device has four major components:
* the USB cable
* the power-adapter
* the disk-drive inside the enclosure
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
One of these components has failed.
Try a different USB cable.
Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.
Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.
Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.
Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.
Have you checked the disk properties to see if the 400 GB of data is still showing. may be your data might be hidden foir some reason. can you give more details pls
Hi wes_unruh. Unfortunately that "click" , known as the click of death, can mean many things. It could be a head, System Area, scratched platters, etc. First, remove the hard drive from its casing. Then connect the hard drive internally to a computer. You might still get the click. Try a diferent angle and try many many times. Check the logic board for any signs of damage. Please DO NOT start swapping parts because there´s aligment, firmware issues and you can make things worse if you need to do Data Recovery. If you had important informacion, you need to take it to a data recovery company such as Ontrack or ADS, because they have the right equipment such as Deepstar, PCI3000 in order to fully retrieve your files.
