SOURCE: Answering machine doesn't pick-up reliably

I found in the manual that if the machine doesn't answer after the correct number of rings, then it may be the ringing system used by the phone company. But I have also heard of people with VOIP (such as Vonage) having problems with this as well.

SOURCE: how to set number of rings

Use Ring Select to choose how many times
the line will ring before the system
answers a call. Set for 2, 4 or Toll Saver.
When you set the system for Toll Saver, it
answers after four rings when you have no
new messages, and after two rings when
you have new messages.
1. Press and hold "set up" for about two
seconds. The system announces the
current ring selection.
2 Press and release "ANNC/SKIP" or "MEMO/REPEAT"
until the system announces your ring
selection.
3 Press and release "Play/Stop" to exit

Number of Rings, I want to reduce the number of rings

Press and hold STOP/SET button for two seconds to access the set-up menu. Press STOP/SET to continue. Press STOP/SET over and over until the Machine says "Rings to Answer". To set the rings to answer just press NEXT or PREVIOUS to select how many rings you would like. Toll Saver option answers after 5 rings unless you already have a message, in that case it will answer after 2 rings. After you hear the option you like, Press STOP/SET button to store it. Now just press STOP/SET over and over until you get to the end of options, it should beep when you get there. Once you get to the end the machine will announce all the settings for review.

The unit appears to be stuck in "message retrieval mode) and is asking for your password to give you access when you call in(remote answering).
