My screen is black and takes black pictures. I can still look at old pictures that are saved to the device and see how much battery power etc, but it will not take pictures of anything but blackness. All I see when ready to take a picture is black.
I can recommend read very well you owner manual specially the troubleshooting section. The images in the LCD monitor will darken in strong sunlight or bright light. This is a normall occurrence the devices containing CCDS, and doesnot contitute a malfunctions.
If you are using too much the flash+zoom, the batteries quicly will drain. maintian another set of batteries for replace, or better buy recharges batteries.

All you have to do is lay your camera with the LCD side down, make sure its on a soft surface like a carpet or a pillow. Once you have it laying down, put a peice or two of newspaper, or any paper, on top of the camera. and then hit it a few times with something. like a brush or anything hard like that. it worked for me. :) good luck.

Oh double my gosh! I had just finished reading every horrible posting on different websites regarding the Coolpix S6 and was about to just trash the camera when I found this posting. THANK YOU so much for taking the time to post this solution. I thought it might be a joke but then again, what could I lose? It absolutely worked. Unbelievable! My screen has been black for almost a year now and have been intending to try to get it in somewhere to be fixed, just haven't had time.

I had the same problem with mine. I searched the web and came across this one. My camera had a black screen but everything else worked. I read some of the comments and a few people said to hit it. I hit the camera in the side of my hand a few times and it started to work. Thanks for the info. It sound carzy but it works.
