Sony KP 53S65 Rear Projection TV

I am having a "problem" with my Sony Rear Projection TV. While watching a program, the screen made a loud "pop" noise, the screen went completely blank and an odor of some sort of burning was smelled. The TV was immediately turned off and disconnected. What could be the problem? Would it be cost effective to repair (the television is about 6 years old)? If it can be repaired is it something I can do myself. I am no expert but I know my away around electronics. Any help would be grealy appreciated. Thanks, Boo

You have a bad capacitor, its location number is c514, and it is located near the horizontal output transistor. i just finished 2 of these sets, the cap values are 390pf @ 2kv. best of luck to you.

I don't know if this will help you but I just experienced a similiar problem with a sony kp-53s35.
It turns out that a fluid leaked out of a rubber boot on one of the guns( I have no idea what the fluid is or why it is corrosive), down to a circuit board and started to desolve a jumper wire. when it had eaten away enough of the wire, the residue or solutionSony KP 53S65 Rear Projection TV - 1.gif was conductive enough to cause an arc to a ground bus bar that ran along the circuit board. The TV still worked but would crack and pop like firecrackers inside.
I was able to increase the distance to the ground source by bending the bar away. Then I scraped and scrubbed the board with contact cleaner to remove residue and replaced jumper wire.
Has worked fine since.

Did you get this TV repaired? What was the cost of the repair? My neighbor has the same tv with the exact same problem. Before calling a technician, I'm trying to find out if they should just scrap it and buy a new tv. Thanks for any help.

How do i get the pip to work with a cable box on the sony kp-53s65

You would need another cable box to watch a different channel on the secondary picture. If you can hook up another cable box then that one will plug into the secondary input.

Samsung HDTV 1080i blue congernce/loud pop

One of the Convergence IC's most likely shorted and that is the pop you heard. Is best to replace both and check micro fuses supplying + & - dc voltage to the chips. Also check the resistors in front of the IC's as they discolor or burn & change value.
