In recent days, my Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500 GB external hard drive has been experiencing unstable electrical power. While the USB connection is fine, I can plainly hear -- and, which I touch the drive, feel -- crackling. The orange power indicator strip light repeatedly dims out, then comes back on. The drive is more than four years old and has long outlived its warranty. I'm concerned about losing all the data that's on it -- even though I have a separate 1 TB Seagate GoFlex Drive that is used exclusively for backing up my files. Something has to be replaced, but do I replace the power supply unit or the entire drive?
You might be able to swap the drive to the other portable drive. Or, if you have a slot in your PC, put it in there. If it runs normally, the PS is shot (wouldn't be the first). Either get a new case with PS, or keep it in the PC. You can power it down when you're not using it.
It's also possible the drive is bad. Find the HDD diagnostic tool in your OS and check it out.

Thank you for your reply.
I have solved the problem with local help.
Printed installation manual of Seagate 500 GB eSATA external hard drive has not properly mentioned how to use power on/off switch once connected to mains. I could get local help, who has already used the device. On/Off switch to be pressed for few seconds after mains connected, sometimes it comes automatically once power is on and USB cable pluged to the USB port of PC if power supply is ok. There is no indicator for the power supply (before device glows) after connected to the mains. I was in confusion whether power supply is ok or not.
Finally, It was found that the problem was with mains power supply and I have changed the power socket and adapter.

Hi there,
Yes you can just take the hard drive out of the case, can use it with any other case, you can also just put it inside your computer and connect it to the sata cable :)
Heres a case you could use for your drive... Click Here

Here is a link to Microsoft on how to get to and use disk management. I do not know what operating system you are using but disk management has not changed a lot. The link below references XP and if you follow this step by step it will work great.

Assuming you are using a Windows operating system, you can just plug it into your computer's USB ports, and the computer will recognise it as another hard drive.
Instructions:
Double-click on 'My Computer' and take note of what drive letters are there (C:, D:, etc.) before you plug in the Seagate Freeagent.
Plug in the Seagate Freeagent. You'll see the new drive, likely E: or F: (depending on what is already there before you plugged in the Seagate Freeagent)
Double-click on the new drive, and it'll open up and you'll see the files stored on that drive. You can drag and drop files and save to this drive like any other folder on your computer.
