The battery in my 1998 regal shorted out and the entire electrical system was flkickering on and off. After installing a new battery, the odometer reads "error", the gear select light always reads 2, the temp gauge reads backwards but works, (Hot is cold and cold is hot) and the oil light is now the seat belt light. ( it flashes until seat belt is buckled.)
The temp light is always on. The speedo, tach and gas gauge all appear to work normally.
My question is: Is there a control module for the instrument cluster, or is all the control built into the cluster?

have you got a dimmer switch on your model to dim the dash lights. if you have it may be faulty. link the cables together if the lights work the switch is faulty. if you have not got a dimmer switch
your printed circuit on the back of the dash may be faulty or the plug in the back of the dash is not pushed all the way in. hope this helps

SOURCE: instrument panel cluster gauges and odometer has stopped working
I had all my analog instrument panel gauges stop working after they did the state emissions test. I found the proper fuse in the fuse block located under the hood. Simply unplugged the fuse, noticed it was still good, and plugged the same fuse (10A) back in and all the gauges started working again. Guess it needed a reset atfer they plugged in for the emissions.

High, The car was jumped correctly. The Battery shorted so bad that the entire electical system was flickering like something from the movies, even before trying to jump it. The AAA tow guy couldn't even get it to jump and had to tow it in to a shop where they diagnosed a shorted battery and replaced it. After that, the car runs fine, and the speedo, gas gauge and tach all work fine, but the other gauges and lights on the cluster are all screwed up. It's like a chip got fried and now the logic is all screwed. Thats why I am asking if the cluster has a separate control module, or are the functions built into the module?
Thanks
Dana
Emissionwiz,
First off, The car WAS jumped correctly. Secondly, what does it have to do with my question? I asked a specific question and you decided to show your "expertise" by questioning what happened rather than answering the question. If you don't have an answer that is helpful, then don't answer at all.
Thanks
Dana
It was jumped incorrectly, nothing else causes this. When u say battery shorted, how do u know this? dd it blow up? that is what they do when they short.
did U jump this car incorrectly?
